1 out of 5 stars This book is dreadful   February 10, 2008

I bought this book with the intention of using it for an Excel class I am teaching. I quickly thumb through it at a book store and ordered a copy for myself and 8 more copies for students. When I had time to examine the book closely, I realized that this was not a good book for anyone learning Excel. It's not even a good reference.

Each page lists the steps for a particular Excel task. There is also a graphic of a worksheet on each page which has print so small that it is very difficult to read. There are practice files that you can download, but it's hard to determine which file goes with which page. Explanations in the book are shallow and often unclear.

After reviewing about 150 pages, I started to wonder about the author. It really didn't seem like he knew much about Excel. I searched for other books that he authored and it looks like this is his first (and I hope last) Excel book. He seems to be stronger in the graphics area than formulas and functions. This may explain why he devoted about 70 pages to Graphics and Shapes and only 32 very shallow pages on formulas and only 12 pages that deal with functions. Twelve pages devoted to Functions in a 500 page Excel book!
