Power on a Pedestal
Designed with a recyclable anodized aluminum frame and glass cover, the iMac is friendlier to the environment.. |
The new keyboard's ultrathin anodized aluminum enclosure features low-profile keys that provide a crisp, responsive feel. | With its anodized aluminum frame set upon a sleek pedestal, the new iMac instantly transforms your workspace from cluttered desktop to brilliant display podium. Because the iMac's housing is made from a single sheet of aluminum, you won't see any seams or screws except for a single compartment on the bottom that provides easy access to the memory slots. The glossy widescreen 24-inch glass display makes photos and movies come alive with rich color. And the built-in iSight camera and microphone are integrated so neatly you barely notice they're there. Aside from the design details, the iMac is also friendlier to the environment with highly recyclable and durable materials including scratch-resistant glass and professional grade aluminum. The power-efficient iMac also meets the stringent new Energy Star 4.0 requirements. With its elegant anodized aluminum enclosure, the new Apple Keyboard looks equally at home in your living room or on your desk. Two USB 2.0 ports provide high-speed connectivity for your iPod, Mighty Mouse, digital camera, and other USB-based electronic devices. | Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience faster, more nimble application performance and improved energy efficiency with this 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo processor from Intel's 45nm Penryn lineup. The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--helps to reduce power consumption while delivering. powerful processing speeds. This 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo processor is aided by a 1066 front-side bus speed and a super-sized 6 MB L2 cache--both top-of-the-line for Intel's Penryn processors. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts. Hard Drive and Memory The 320 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of PC6400 DDR2 RAM (two 1 GB SO-DIMMs) has an industry-leading 800 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 4 GB. Graphics and Video The 24-inch widescreen TFT active-matrix LCD offers a resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels. It has a brightness rating of 385 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), a contrast ratio of 750:1, and a viewing angle of 178 degrees (both horizontal and vertical). An ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor powers the iMac with 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory. It features some of the most advanced graphics technology available and delivers new levels of visual realism and a huge texture fill rate for smooth surfaces and complex character details. GDDR3 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 3) is a graphics card-specific memory technology that's better able to deliver fluid frame rates for even the most advanced games and applications. This iMac also enables you to connect a second display in either extended desktop mode or video mirroring mode. The mini-DVI port connects to DVI displays, VGA monitors and projectors, and S-video and composite devices using the appropriate adapter (sold separately). Wired and Wireless Connectivity
You get a full complement of ports on the back of the iMac, including three USB 2.0 and two flavors of Firewire--400 and 800. | The iMac gives you plenty of room to grow, accommodating as many as five peripherals at a time thanks to its three USB 2.0 ports and the two USB 2.0 ports on the Apple Keyboard. It also includes two powered FireWire ports--one FireWire 400 and one FireWire 800 (one of the fastest peripheral standards available)--enabling you to quickly transfer content from digital video cameras, hard drives, and other high-speed devices. Share files around your house with built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet as well as the next-generation high-speed wireless 802.11n technology, which is integrated into the latest Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. Shuts down randomly! November 8, 2008 HappyArmyWife (CA) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have had nothing but problems with this computer ever since I got it. I am a photographer, and had assumed that with Apple's "reputation" and the ridiculous price of their products, they would produce a quality computer. WRONG. Since the beginning, it has shut down on my randomly, and it doesn't matter how long I have used it, had it on, which applications are being utilized, how many, etc. There is absolutely no method to the madness. Instead of taking it right back to the store like I should have done, I tried to call Apple Support since I had popped the $250 for it and figured I should use it. Every time I called them (after multiple shut downs), they would give me a different "fix," as if there wasn't a single standard procedure, and every operator had to wing it on their own experience. After multiple calls, they sent me over to an Apple store, where I spent 4 hours while the tech studied my computer inside and out. After testing the hardware, he said there was nothing wrong with it, and the best he could do was send me home with some mickey-moused homemade script that would auto-save my work in Numbers and Pages every 1 minute so that I wouldn't at least lose my entire document and have to start over again like I had been. Wow. What $250 buys me. They also said that if it keeps acting up, to reinstall the OS, which I did when I got home, and not 24 hours later, it shut down again. I'm about to throw it out the window and try not to think about the $1800+ I spent on the computer, support and extra software. What an absolute waste.
Good Computer, Bad Screen November 4, 2008 davez82 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Recently returned an 24"imac because of the dreaded yellow screen/ yellow gradient issue. The center of the screen is yellowish while the sides are not. The right side of the screen is also progressively darker than the middle or the left side. The yellowish tint is most noticeable on a white background mainly a webpage or word document with lots of white. It is noticeable on other colors as well, very disappointing for graphics or photo work. The yellow tint takes up 1/3 of the center of the screen, very very annoying and inaccurate. If you have a sharp eye for details or need the computer for color sensitive work then you may not want this computer. I also noticed this problem at several mac and best buy stores, some notice it some don't. For me, even viewing amazon.com was a pain because of the yellow tint. If the whole screen was yellowish it would be more tolerable then a partly yellowish screen. It is just really annoying.
Excellent Service and Price!!! November 1, 2008 J. Mattos (San Diego, CA) First off, I'm that type of buyer that usually does business in person 99% of the time or whenever possible. I had been searching around for a good deal on a new iMac 24-inch for at least 6 months. I noticed that overall prices were pretty much the same everywhere. I finally chose to go with Amazon because they offered a fair price, free shipping, and an attractive [...] rebate which I received in about 2 weeks time. I was pleasantly suprised with the free delivery option which showed up at my door 4 days early than they had quoted. The package contents were in pristine condition with no visible damage to the box upon arrival. I was so pleased with the service I ordered a new canon printer shortly after. Thanks Amazon!!!
My best Mac purchase yet! October 26, 2008 Joe Smith (Atlanta, GA) I have used Macs on and off for a while now, and I have to say that my iMac here is the best I have owned. Why? I have been in the video editing and graphics business for a bit now. For those who know about these know that they are extremely taxing on computer resources. Not so with the iMac. I use Final Cut Express, Photoshop, iMovie, Flash, etc. the list goes on. I have never had a performance problem. The graphics card is more than adequate, the initial hard disk space is good, but you'll probably need an external (or 3) if you are into video editing. One recommendation I would throw in is to upgrade to 4 GB or RAM if you plan on doing anything with HD video. While the initial RAM amount is great, you will definitely want to upgrade if you are a video person. While I don't want to review software, I will say that OS X is very smooth and the UI is second to none. Safari is decent, but has some color problems. Most of the included tools are simple to use, and installing programs is as easy as drag this file to Applications, and deleting is as easy as drag that file to the trash (minus some preference files). Ok, enough about that. Do you like PC? Do you want Windows as well? No problem, Mac has you covered. Boot Camp will allow you to install Windows XP or Vista on a partition of your hard drive so you can use both! Changing between them is simple. Reboot the computer, hold Alt/Option upon hearing the tone, and then select Windows or OS X. Most of your Windows programs should work fine. I did run into a few, and let me stress few, problems related to the graphics card. Some programs (Maya 7 I believe) and a game here and there didn't work, but fret not. A small price to pay if you want 2 computers in one at the cost of 1% or less of the software library on one. Did I mention the slick flat keyboard and mouse? Both are great! Not to trail off much, but a warning for your Windows users. You'll have to switch an option back in forth if you want your keyboard to allow you to use the function keys as normal instead of the mac way (ie sound control, brightness control, etc.). A big note on the mouse though. You may want to get another mouse when using the PC side, or disable side buttons. The mighty mouse's left side button is almost impossible not to touch. It is a hair trigger for going back in a web browser. This will drive you nuts (I promise you) if you old a mouse normally. Jumping back and forth through pages is annoying, so do yourself a favor and switch out your mouse or disable the button. So what are you waiting for? This is a Mac and PC (Windows sold separate) all in one. Amazing high quality for watching DVD's, playing games, making art, publishing, editing video, etc. Not to mention the price, while a bit steeper than some, is more than fair for this computer + High Definition 24" monitor!!
An excellent machine for most home use October 24, 2008 Doug Stewart (Philadelphia, PA USA) The iMac has been a very solid machine for us thus far. While it isn't the best-performing all-in-one out there, it handles most tasks a home user could throw at it with aplomb. The screen is absolutely one of the best computer screens I've ever had the privilege to use. The only downside is that this model, like all the models Amazon carries, does not even have the option of the upgraded NVIDIA graphics adaptor, hence my docking a full star.
