1 out of 5 stars Hold out for Amplitube 2   September 13, 2008

I was looking for an inexpensive amp simulator to run on Garageband, as the stock guitar sounds are pretty lame. I had downloaded Amplitube 2 Live on a 10-day trial, and even though it's limited to basically a Fender-type and Marshall-type amp settings (along with a bass amp), I found them to be pretty usable and flexible. Basically I was looking for something I could plug into (using a Lexicon Lambda as interface to an iMac) and quickly grab some ideas with minimal fuss and decent tone. Amplitube 2 Live easily interfaced with Garageband and worked pretty good with little noticeable latency. When the trial period ran out I came across a deal for Amplitube (1) Live and thought I would try that. What a disappointment! Even though it has a boatload of preset sounds (which you can reconfigure), most of them are not useful. I felt the overall tones were more digital and less organic sounding than the Amplitube 2 Live trial version. Also Amplitube 1 Live had a very noticeable latency delay that was a bit aggravating, and I could not get it to interface with Garageband. And forget about support or documentation from IK. Bottom line - don't spend your money on this (Amplitube 1 Live), no matter how good the deal looks. Amplitube 2 Live at less than 100 bucks is a better deal

This is an excelent program but you need to now how it works and how the sound card settings works after that it's great...if you have a couple of good spekers or something loud instaled in your pc the experience is more than great, sond's like a big stack in your room.

4 out of 5 stars Amplitube is very good guitar amp sim/processing software   August 26, 2005

To my ears, the software is quite good. It does take the raw signal from an electric guitar and process it in such a way that it sounds like it is coming out of a selection of real amplifiers. This way you get some classic sounds without having to go out and buy a half dozen amplifiers--and you don't have to lug them around! The software also includes noise gate, reverb, delay, distortion pedal, etc.

To correct a few erroneous comments in other reviews . . .

Even if you have a fast computer, you can still have unacceptable delays between when you strum your guitar and when the processed sound comes out of your computer. This is not Amplitube's fault. You also need a high quality sound card and low latency drivers such as ASIO or WDM, and you need to know how to optimize the latency settings. If you are using a laptop with a generic sound card and MME drivers, your delay will be long regardless how good your computer is.

You can use Amplitube LE for recording, but you will need a host software such as Cakewalk, or Cubase. You can't record if Amplitube is all you have, and I don't think they made that claim.

As I said, Amplitube sounds pretty good and realistic to my ears, but of course, that is a matter of taste.

I picked up this program from the local store and checked it out a couple times...Eventually I bought it, and it is not what I expected. The program claims to have the same feel as a real amp and little delay time. It also claims to be able to record what you play. So I installed it, and noticed instantly that there is a bad delay. I'm running a pretty quick little Sony VAIO with Windows XP so you can't blame the hardware. Next, I'm looking for a record feature. It does not exist! The product website disagrees with me, but it is not included in this program. Other than these issues, it is a very good quality program, but I personally do not find it to be worth the 80 bucks you'll have to pay for it...
