    Amazon.com Product Description
The newest generation of its popular Eee PC line, the Asus Eee PC 900 provides the power of a full-sized laptop in a compact body with a larger 8.9-inch screen. Even with the larger size of the Eee PC 900 when compared to the original Eee PC, the new model still weighs under 2 pounds--perfect for students toting to school or road warriors packing away to Wi-Fi hotspots. And because it uses flash memory instead of a hard drive (with 20 GB of storage), the Eee PC 900 is optimal for weathering rough handling and sharing space in overstuffed bags.

The Asus Eee PC 900's 8.9-inch screen is easier on the eyes, and the integrated webcam makes video chats a snap.
Other features include a 1.3-megapixel webcam integrated into the bezel above the LCD, a Secure Digital memory card slot, Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), multiple USB ports, and a VGA output for connecting to a monitor. It comes preinstalled with the Linux operating system, and it's also compatible with the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

For the students and professionals, the Eee PC comes with a powerful selection of software to maximize personal productivity--over 40 built-in applications. The Open Office suite of software enables the user to open, edit and create documents, presentations, spreadsheets and databases that are compatible with Microsoft Office. For journalists, photographers and other professionals who need to use a computer in the field to create, to communicate and to collaborate with other colleagues, the Eee PC's combination of power, extreme portability and rugged build makes it the ideal computing solution.

No technical manual required with the specially designed, user-friendly, and intuitive graphic interface..
It's also a great choice for young students, with a built-in Dictionary that's great for homework, and it includes two modes of intuitive graphic user interface design to accommodate both experienced and inexperienced PC users. The Eee PC also handles your digital images, movies, and music as well as Internet radio.

Nicely light at just 35 ounces, the Eee PC 900 has an 8.9-inch wide TFT LCD with a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution (WXGA)--making it more comfortable on eyes than its predecessor. Under the hood is a 900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU with integrated Intel graphics processor, 1 GB of RAM (not expandable), and 20 GB of flash memory solid-state drive (SSD). The SSD provides quiet performance and helps save energy, while its shock-proof solid state design helps to guard against data loss or shock-related damage if the laptop is dropped.

The Eee PC includes software for Web browsing (Firefox), e-mail, OpenOffice 2.0 for creating and editing word processing documents and spreadsheets, and a suite of other productivity software to help keep you on track.

You get three USB 2.0 ports, a VGA output for connecting to external monitors, headphone and microphone jacks, and a Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot. The rechargeable battery provides up to 3.5 hours of battery life (depending on usage). It's backed by a 1 year warranty for parts and labor.

3 out of 5 stars For the complete novice or expert programmer - no one in between   October 7, 2008
    Matthew B. Boorstin (Atlanta, GA)
Yes, the Eeepc is a wonder, but you need to know what you're getting with this if you don't opt for Windows. You are NOT getting a computer with an open operating system and a few useful programs - you are getting a completely modified version of Linux that is locked from any customization what-so-ever.

If you are a complete novice and just want to check email and surf the web, then this computer is wonderful. And if you are a hardened Linux programmer, you can dig into this thing and modify it to your heart's content.

But if you're like the other 90% of us, you have enough experience with computers that you'd probably like to install something that isn't already on it, and unless you enroll in a programming class, GOOD LUCK!

I'm rooting for Linux, but it has a LONG way to go. It's absolutely impractical for anyone not already an expert with it. I am a database programmer, so I'm usually pretty resourceful when it comes to figuring things out, but even I have spent WEEKS trying to get this thing to do what I want. Once I started modifying it, there were nothing but problems. I swear, I actively had to reprogram the operating system to NOT delete files off the desktop when it's turned off. That's insane. It's not worth it...

Go for the Windows install, or get a Dell Mini. You've been warned...

4 out of 5 stars Nice but the operating system had to go   September 28, 2008

It's great, but in order to enjoy it I had to load "eee ubuntu."

    Now everything is fine.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm Lovin it   September 13, 2008
    W. Scott (Atlanta, Ga)
Its what I had in mind when I decided to look for a small, lightweight little laptop for personal travel use. It filled my every expectation.
I wanted something that I could drop in my carry-on and not have to huff and puff as I was lugging it thru the airport.
I'm not expecting it to do my engineering work, I've got a company unit for that (and what a pain it is to use in the hotel room with all its firewall protection).
There are things that some might want in this that it doesn't have, but they would just make it bigger or more expensive.
I've had it 6 weeks now and am real happy; got what I paid for.

5 out of 5 stars Great product for its intended purpose; and really fun   August 28, 2008

This laptop is very small and very light. As a consequence, the keyboard is tiny. People complain about that but they miss the point. It isn't as small as a BlackBerry or similar devices. The laptop is about the size of a small book so it is easy to take with you when you don't feel like lugging a huge laptop.

The screen is very good and the Linux OS is just fine. I like Linux but my wife, you is neutral, said she doesn't care if it has XP or not. She can work with her documents and surf no problem.

I used it when I was on jury duty and wrote to my wife and work since we weren't allowed to have cell phones. It connected to their wireless flawlessly and the time flew by as I watched movies and sent email.

Another cool thing is the huge communities that have been created for this thing. They show how to mod it, put operating systems on it, all kinds of things. You can get an MSI wind I suppose, but it won't have the cult following!

4 out of 5 stars good for its price   August 25, 2008

cons: this pc gets hot after a while. wireless is not that great despite having strong signal. the linux OS is inflexible
pros: fast and webcam is nice.
