Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

The Microsoft software is simple to use and has the same interface as its Office-mates, so current Word or Excel users should be able to slide right in behind the controls and start working in minutes. The program requires more learning than with other Office programs, particularly as most users will be unfamiliar with visual design concepts. Still, a little investment in time pays off handsomely with spiffy slide shows and Web-based instructional graphics.

There are a few standard elements in a slideshow, and adding each of these was quite simple. Users could incorporate scanned images or use the intelligently suggested clip art accompanying the software; these include tons of options for formatting text alongside or within the graphics. Organizing the information you need to present is also easily accomplished with a navigation bar next to the display window. Once you're done with this additions, use the Web integration to publish directly, or save the files for replay at a presentation or training session later.

Since PowerPoint 2000 is fully interoperable with the rest of the Office 2000 suite, you can easily integrate text, data, and more into your shows--or even plug your demos into Visual Basic for Applications code if you're a wizard. --Rob Lightner
