DRM - I want to buy software September 8, 2008 Joseph Meyer The game is amazing. Too bad I won't be buying it because they don't want to sell it to me. They want me to give them money to treat me like I am a criminal. No thanks
No way in hell September 8, 2008 James Garcia (Highland, IN) This is a perfect example of how to ruin a great game. There is no chance that I will purchase this game now.
Listen up EA September 8, 2008 BG Farmer 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Nothing to add to what's been said before, potentially great game ruined by over the top DRM that realistically prevent you from 'owning' a game you've paid money for. Congratulations EA on doing the opposite of what you intended and driving potential customers into the waiting arms of pirates. Listen up and make the changes.
Game Fun, DRM BAAAD September 8, 2008 D. Heroux (Washington State, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I must have been living under a rock, as I had not heard word of the DRM issues before purchasing this game. And I was shocked, and am not surprised at all about the backlash here and other places regarding the crazy DRM scheme. I am all for protecting content but not at the expense of the paying customers like this. I like many here tend to format and re-install everything at least once a year to keep my computer fast and fresh. Now I have to think about Spore when I do that. Thanks but no thanks EA if I could return the game I would. The game it self is fun, top notch game and if not for the DRM would totally be a 5+ star. But like all the others the DRM is too much for this customer.
A $50 rental September 8, 2008 Brandon! (Sacramento, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The DRM in Spore, like Mass Effect, kills any chance of this game getting installed on my system (at least, the retail copy of this game). I still have my original CD of Quake, and when I'm in the mood, I can install it and play, even 12 years later, without id's "permission." If you think this CD of Spore will be playable in 12 years, you're wrong. It's unlikely the authentication servers at EA will still be active in 2020 -- but don't worry, EA will happily offer to sell you a digital copy of the game for only 19.99. What this amounts to is a $50 rental of the game now, because when your activations are expired, you won't get to play it anymore, and you'll be forced to buy another copy. Let's face it, EA says they'll grant additional activations, but what reason do they have to do this? By not providing an additional license, EA financially benefits by selling you a second copy of the game. There's no need for this DRM to be part of the game. The pirates will always pirate the goods (they've had a cracked version of the game on the torrent sites a week before the game was released) and the non-pirates will always make a legal purchase. By infesting a game with DRM, EA has done nothing but lose a lot of money. Idiots.
