Norton 360 Version 2 May 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This newer version is a REAL DOG. Part of the program, ccSvcHst.exe, keeps taking over my computer, using between 90 to 99% of the CPU resources. It runs in the foreground and grinds any practical use of the computer to a halt. My recommendation is to STAY AWAY from this program -- at least until they get this bug out. It made me click one star, but is deserves a ZERO.
Stay away and save your bank account..... May 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If I had read the reviews at AMAZON or EPinions before I shelled out 59.99, my blood pressure would be normal and I wouldn't be suffering from an everwhelming urge to throw my computer monitor thru the wall because of my frustration with the Norton 360 software I downloaded and purchased from their site. This is a complete and utter rip-off of consumer dollars. After three days I have yet to even to get the software to activate. Nothing works, and customer support is a joke. Less than none. It's as if NORTON moved to India and disconected the internet and took the phone off the hook. They seem to be in business only to charge credit cards without providing the service that's been paid for. Based on the number of bad reviews, it's almost a RICO statute court case waiting in the wings....
Again, stay away from Norton. It's better to have a virus and have your identity stolen on-line that to have to deal with both the anger and regret that comes from purchasing a Norton product.
Slow install, sluggish, antispam limited May 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been a user of Norton for many years. I seriously looked for another product, but all had some negatives in their reviews, so I decided to upgrade from Norton 360 to Norton 360 Version 2. So far, the product works OK for what it is supposed to do.
Installation is a real bear. I installed on an XP laptop - it seemed to take forever but I did not time it. I installed on a Vista laptop and timed it. I had purchased a CD package. It took 25 min to download an update to the CD, then 45 minutes to uninstall Norton 360 version 1. It then did a short scan and required a restart. Installation then took another 25 minutes. In spite of the initial update, another LiveUpdate was required to get current and took at least 10 minutes - this is with a fast cable connection.
Anti-spam is not included in the base package. You have to install the free Norton Add-On Pack. This only took a few minutes. However, the website says it works with POP3 email packages like Outlook and Outlook Express. This is misleading. It does not work with Vista Windows Mail, the replacement for Outlook Express that ships with Vista. This has been confirmed with Norton through their e-mail support. I consider this a major deficiency.
Anti-spam did install for my Outlook 2000 on the XP machine. It appears identical to the Anti-spam add on from Norton 360 version 1. This version includes a new "training" feature that looks at your saved emails and attempts to learn what you consider spam. It presented me with a list of folders to examine, including folders from several archive.pst files I keep live. I unchecked all the archive folders but it still examined all of them. The training took about 6 hours to complete, during which time I could not use my email.
The system gets sluggish from time to time, and when I check what is running, it is usually Norton consuming resources. The sluggishness is annoying and is not limited to times the system is not in use as Norton claims. I can be in the middle of a game and the system grinds to a halt.
I have never received a virus or spyware while using a Norton product, so that is good. Every new install requires some tweaking of the firewall to get things working again.
I find the Norton renewal messages objectionable. When you have 30 days before expiration it starts giving renewal messages with no obvious ways to stop them. They pop up 3-4 times a day. Also, when the service expires, the product stops working. Other products I have used, continue working, you just can't get updates to virus definitions.

Horrible all-consuming application! April 5, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
If you want to dedicate your PC's resources to CONSTANTLY scanning your hard drive for viruses, this product is for you. This pig of a product NEVER stops scanning my hard disk. I have it configured for fully manual operation, meaning it should not do anything unless I tell it to. Nonetheless, it is constantly running a scan on my drive, severely using up CPU cycles (50%-75% CPU utilization). Three calls with Symantec tech support delivered the same results. As far as they're concerned, the software is doing what it's supposed to do. I for one have my PC in order to do tasks, NOT just make sure it's virus free. I've had it with this product and am uninstalling it. I recommend you go elsewhere for your virus scanning needs. Like Zone Alarm. Unless, of course, you bought your PC for the sole purpose of making sure it doesn't have a virus?!
