5 out of 5 stars Very Accurate & Easy to use OCR Software Package   September 8, 2008

I purchased ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Pro and used it to OCR a 560-page book this weekend. The book contains genealogy information, with numerous reproductions of old documents and family pictures. I wanted to create an electronic copy for archival purposes, and to make the contents "searchable" in PDF document format. It did a fantastic job of recognizing the text, with virtually 100% accurate text replacement suggestions. It also did a very good job of recognizing pictures, with only a few document reproductions needing manually selection with the picture box tool. I was also impressed with the compact PDF output. Using the 'print quality' (300dpi) picture setting produced a PDF file size of just under 25 MB for the entire 560-page document! The OCR process and quick review of the 560 converted pages only took about two hours. I'll probably go back later for a closer check of the FineReader document, but I doubt I'll find many OCR errors.

My congratulations to the ABBYY development team, and special thanks to Amazon for getting this order to me in one-day using standard shipping!

5 out of 5 stars Abbyy Finereader continues to improve   May 25, 2008

After learning about the new release of Abbyy Finereader 9.0, I decided to download the trial edition. I have used Finereader since version 6 and upgraded to 8 two years ago. Personally, I think Finereader is a better program than Omnipage in recognizing text and maintaining the original format and layout of a scan. While Finereader is expensive, Omnipage is costly too. In terms of price, I find Finereader 9 is worth the upgrade fee. After searching on Google, I found a discounted upgrade price of $130 for Finereader 9. Wasted time is wasted money in the scheme of life. Therefore, I will explain why Finereader 9 is worth purchasing.

Finereader 8 is a good program, but version 9 improves the interface and accuracy of the program. I scanned a complicated newspaper column at 600 dpi and Finereader 9 was able to recognize fonts much better than 8 and maintain the format exactly. After closely looking at the fonts Finereader 9 chose, I think this feature alone is valuable to maintain the original document's appearance. The interface makes it much easier to compare the original scan with the edited copy, which also saves time. Finereader 9 provides lots of output options that include RTF, DOC, Word, XLS, PDF, HTML, PPT, TXT, DBF, CSV, and LIT. I think the program lets a user customize these file types better than version 8.

Edit options within Abbyy Finereader 9 are also better than version 8. It is easy to crop, rotate, split, invert, erase, and change the image resolution within a scanned image. In the past, I did scan a lot of documents into Photoshop before I imported them into Finereader. With version 8 and 9, this option is not necessary for most documents. My newspaper scan provides a lot of field tests because , newspapers have a lot of unique format qualities that include multiple fonts, grayish backgrounds, pictures laid within text columns, and small text. Finereader 9 made only this mistake: (Fm instead of (I'm. This shows me that 9 is very accurate when put under difficult conditions.

I will try to post images of the documents I scanned to show Finereader's accuracy. My only disappoint so far is version 8 made it easy to add meta information to PDF tags. I have yet to find this ability in 9. It does a good job of showing the tagged order, but the meta information was easy to input into version 8. Version 7 of Finereader was bad, eight was great, and 9 is excellent. Continue to advance OCR Abbyy. Here are some of the program's new features according to the program help menu:
