1 out of 5 stars $10 per call for assistance/help, a real rip-off just to call for help!   March 31, 2008

I will definitely NOT buy this product. I refuse to be RIPPED OFF $10 for EACH AND EVERY time you e-maill or call customer service. This is totally ludicrous, and the support service should be included with the purchase of the product. Apparent Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking is trying to squeeze every nickle and dime out of their customers. I refuse to by any product by a company that will do that to their customers. I think this is about the ONLY company that charges for their support. Try to find an alternative voice recognition software company who will support their product free of charge. SHAME ON YOU, NUANCE DRAGON NATURALLY SPEAKING.

5 out of 5 stars Effective keyboard replacement   February 8, 2008

My wife uses Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred for her work. I looked at it as it seemed very good, much better than the last time I worked with speech recognition (8 years ago). Since it did not good on medical terms, I purchased Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical. This product is excellent, it works great "out of the box". All terms instantly, there was one word I thought it had spelling wrong, but I was actually mistaken: Dragon did better on spelling than I. I would say only one minor problem with names of patients, but once you spend some time on adding them to the vocabulary even that is solved.

All I can really say is that I love DNS 9 Med. It's full-featured and wonderfully accurate. I will say it does take some time to obtain great accuracy, but with patience and a little time, you can go really far with DNS Med 9.

If you dive into writing scripts, you'll really unlock the potential of DNS.

I love it. Make sure you have a good system before expecting good quality.

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, not as good as a transcriptionist   November 10, 2007

I am dictating this reviewusing Dragon NaturallySpeaking medical edition version 9.5 under windows Vista.so that you can get a fair idea of the errors in transcription {that} have to be corrected, [and] {I am} putting the corrections [endorses] {in braces} and the errors in [brackets]. [I appears in ] {I have been using} this product in my practice for approximately 3 months. Technologically, this is a fantastic product. It does an outstanding job with complex medical vocabulary: Right hemicolectomy; uvulopalatal pharyngoplasty;bipolar hemiarthroplasty; total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy; hyalin degeneration; [stem ] {psammoma] bodies. as you can see, there are very few errors with medical jargon. The problem comes with common every day words especially homonyms. For [exam] {example}: the program has trouble distinguishing between two, to, too, 2. [And] {It} also has trouble with patient names [with] {which} a typist would easily [Swarthout] {sort out:} Mrs. [O. Sullivan] {O'Sullivan}. The main trouble is [a duplicate] {you can't just} blaze through dictating [age of] [the eighth Canham with] {the way you can with a} transcriptionist. [He always happy] {You always have to be} watching the screen and correcting [a to] {as you} go along. as you can see from the errors in brackets here, this can be quite time consuming. Those of [you've been] {you who can} type well may very well [prefire] {prefer} typing [and] {your} notes. [the U.] {Those of you} used to dictating with a transcriptionist [nasi in] {may find} this program maddening.with all the correcting that I have to do to my dictation, this program [stays] {saves} me very little, if any, time. [you've ever] {You never} catch all of the errors. [the first on this dictation are corrupting in spite of the program having been of the throat pain. And post] {The errors that you see occurring here are occurring in spite of the program having been "trained" by [repented of] {repetative} manual corrections. those of you [through the] {who require} relatively [or] {error} free dictations, are probably better off with a transcriptionist. overall the product is very good, but not quite ready for the [lentiginous well] {litiginous world} of medical transcription.

3 out of 5 stars Works well enough but is still frustrating   September 26, 2007

I started my trek to use voice recognition instead of dictation for my practice in 1995 using Dragon Secretary for the Mac. It was tough then to project 12 years into the future, and I'm still disappointed that the AI part of the program is not as good as it could be - I tried to train new words not in the vocabulary but still get errors. It works extremely well for lab tests and medications, disease names. They have tried to improve the accuracy by predicting the flow of your vocabulary from sample data, but HIPAA prevents submitting clinical notes for such improvement. I do save 40% time over typing. I pray for the day when it runs natively on the Mac. Meanwhile, it runs well on a virtual machine created by VMware Fusion Mac and Windows XP SP2B for System Builders.
