Note: the author of this review is IT manager of a worldwide operating electronics manufacturing company, with experience in Linux and Windows Server systems.
Ordered a new 2003 Small Business Server Standard (retail box)this month @ Amazon.
Main purpose, to setup as a file, and web based intranet application server in one of our subsidiary corporate offices.
Simple and straightforward one would assume.
However, after installation and setting up the new server 2003 system, we found that mysteriously our new Windows 2003 server was shutting down itself randomly after a couple of hours of operation.
At first we suspected a hardware error to be the culprit, but comprehensive server hardware tests did not reveal anything.
Next, log files of the Windows 2003 OS where reviewed, and sure enough
it showed what the nature of the problem was....
To our amazement the system event viewer had several entries stating that because this retail Small Business Server 2003 was NOT setup as a DC, (Domain Controller) as DEMANDED (SIC!)in Microsoft's EULA, blah blah, the server was going to shut down itself...
Excuse me, but here Microsoft clearly is crossing the red line of what are acceptable limitations as set forth in their EULA's an what is NOT !
Building in an EULA Policing Software Time Bomb is absolutely and totally unacceptable. Big brother is watching you...
We have already a DC running in this particular IT infrastructure, so we don't want and need a second one.
So, today- as result of Microsoft's latest arrogant additions to its 2003 software, we have decided to switch our entire server infra structure to Linux, no matter what, followed by the move from XP Desktop PC's to a Linux alternative for business use.
This was the proverbial drop that overflowed the bucket...
There are excellent Desktop replacement Linux OS available today, offered here on Amazon, from a company starting with an X.
Good bye Microsoft.
