Amazon.com Review McAfee Firewall 4.0 helps protect your PC against hackers and prevents any rogue programs you may have picked up from divulging information about you or your PC. New in Firewall 4.0 is a setup wizard that greatly simplifies initial installation and configuration. The included manual provides a lot of useful and instructive information about different ways your PC's security can be compromised, although beginners and even some experienced users may find a lot of the jargon and concepts heavy going. Unlike earlier versions, McAfee Firewall 4.0 supports Internet connection sharing and has also been enhanced for broadband, so people with home networks are fully supported. Also new in this release is an intrusion detection system that blocks port scanners. McAfee Firewall 4.0 recognizes most legitimate programs and automatically creates rules to allow them to communicate with the Internet. Users can create their own rules, but this can be tricky for the novice. Some of the warning dialog boxes tend toward jargon-filled prose, too. The status screen tells you exactly what is going on at any given time. The network traffic display lets you see immediately if any unexpected activity is occurring. A useful visual trace system lets you track down the source of any intrusions, and can even help uncover the owner of the source system. McAfee Firewall 4.0 works with all versions of Windows up to and including XP, although anyone who upgrades to XP from an earlier version must reinstall this program to ensure it continues to work correctly. Of course, the most important aspect is how well the program actually works, and McAfee Firewall 4.0 passes all the usual tests with flying colors. It happily deals with all the common intrusion techniques and several rarer ones. The built-in auto update feature ensures the product is able to cope with any new threats as they appear. New users may struggle to get the best from McAfee Firewall 4.0, but more experienced users will find a flexible and feature-rich tool that can be used with confidence. There are also enough new features here to make it a worthwhile purchase for current users wanting to upgrade. --Iain Laskey, Amazon.co.uk

They call it McA FEE for a reason December 10, 2003 A Very Lucky Fan (St. Louis) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The most pathetic excuse I have ever seen for customer service. After regretfully paying (in advance) with a credit card, I was provided with a number to call and a PIN number to use. When I attempted to call the number, I was never connected with anyone EXCEPT a telephone company recording that "my call did not go through" this continued for 2 days. When I called the customer support number (at my own cost) to ask for a good number for Technical Support, I was on hold for 30 minutes before I got a chance to speak to a representative. When someone answered the phone, I was told to use the same 900 number that was recited over and over while I was on hold. I refused to accept that because I had contacted the web site previously and would have ended up paying TWICE for a service that should be provided for free. It was at this point the fellow on the other end asked me what number I was trying to call previously. When he told me that the number provided by their website was incorrect, I wanted to reach through the telephone lines and, well I'll let you use your imagination.... It's pretty obvious that McA FEE doesn't care at all about support, and if they can't even do something as simple as give a good number on their website, how can they fix their own darned program. I'm from St. Louis and I would try to fly by jumping off the top of the Gateway Arch before I would give McA FEE one more cent! If you purchase their product after reading about this experience, you deserve every bit of trouble you encounter.
annoying restart and awful visual interface September 25, 2003 You can't resize the console. The manual has a couple of mistakes. There is no "Enable port scan detection check". I think it's referring to "Detect port scanning activity". I was tricked by a marketing ploy to buy it to my regret. What a waste -Tom
Terrible Customer Support July 6, 2003 M. Perini 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I can not figure out how to get McAfee's Firewall product to automatically enable when I boot my PC. It really should automatically boot, rather than have to be enabled everytime the PC is booted. McAfee's FAQ section on their website does not answer that question, and in fact, it seems that McAfee's customer support strategy is to force customer to pay an annual fee of $$ or to pay $ per minute for customer service calls. BAD, BAD, BAD, AVOID THIS PRODUCT AND AVOID MCAFEE.

Does not support Windows 95 or NT April 2, 2003 TES (Chestertown, MD United States) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Unable to install this product. It is misrepresented as operable on Windows NT. I have spoken to tech support McAfee.com and they have confirmed that this program operates only on 98, ME, 2000 Professional, and XP.
