Excellent combination of word processing and page layout May 9, 2000

Unlike the endless features and automatic actions of MSWord, Framemaker is more streamlined. It's functional set is an excellent balance of word processing and page layout, combined with features that ease the creation of multi-chapter documents.The interface is highly intuitive, as is the page layout metaphor. The styles (page, paragraph, character) are easy to use, as well. Best of all, Framemaker does not have the endless automatic bells and whistles that often has MSWord acting in unexplainable and undefeatable ways. Frame is an industrial strength tool for creating everything from a one-page letter or note to a thousand page manual.

My institution standardizes on MS Word (it's free therefore for me touse) yet MS Word's various automatic actions prevent me fromcontrolling what the pages I type end up looking like. I cannot stand that as I generate business brochures for picky audiences. I MUST control every aspect of what the final page looks like. Framemaker lets me do that. I also write lots of books, nice long 1000 page ones (2000 manuscript pages when double spacing is required). Doing a book on MSWord (the two times I tried) was a disaster. MSWord is not designed for large documents, Framemaker is. I do not have time for reviews like this but I feel strongly about this product. If you want control, buy it; if you want reliable performance, buy it; if you write long documents, buy it. I have been using this product for ten years, and, I am extremely grateful to Microsoft corporation for reducing the prices of all the software I use. So, I regret that MS Word is unusable for the type of documents I prepare. I like the company but this Framemaker product simply performs better for long documents that need each page's appearance expertly controlled.

A powerful documentation tool! This is the tool to use when assembling documents of 30 pages or more. Despite its higher price tag, Framemaker offers users the greatest bang for the buck. Learning Frame (as it's know for short) isn't much more difficult than learning MS Word. And it offers far more power and flexibility. Above all, Framemaker is very stable software. I've worked extensively with Framemaker and MS Word and I've found Frame to be much more stable and reliable.A bonus with this package is that it comes with the complete Adobe Acrobat package which allows you to create and distribute PDF files instantly. Microsoft Word works well to a point, but falters once the length and complexity of your documents start to grow. For the big jobs, count on Framemaker.
