Does What You Expect, Not Much More September 22, 2008 Harrison Bergeron (Santa Clara, CA USA) McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 is pretty much your typical virus protection as you surf the web. I'm sure it's better than their previous version--I just don't know how. I like my virus scanners to do their job but stay in the background and not take any (noticeably) additional CPU power. VirusScan does this, but most other freeware virus scanners do as well if not better.
Won't let me connect to the internet!!! August 30, 2008 J. D. Jenks (Baltimore, MD USA) After uninstalling Norton Antivirus (duh), I installed McAfee VirusScan Plus. This program won't allow any programs on my laptop to connect to the internet, including itself! I've spent countless hours, on the phone and on-line, with McAfee's apparently all-Indian support team. First they blame it on Norton, then they blame it on my ISP...no, it's their fault. When I remove McAfee, everything's hunky-dory. Maybe my problem is an anomaly, but I wish I had just paid to upgrade Norton. At least I now have a good Indian friend named Mike, who likes to tell me to "have a good sleep." Good luck, all, but this program is not for me.
Not Designed to Integrate with Performance on Your Machine August 28, 2008 Natalie Kilpatrick (Omaha, NE United States) I haven't used AVPs for years, mainly because I don't need them (I know what to not click on) and they slow my system to a crawl. This is ridiculous. In those 3-5 years I have not used one of these programs, someone could have noticed this HUGE design flaw and fixed it. My system still slows to nearly a complete stop. And killing it in Task Manager doesn't help, either. I was afraid that even after uninstalling it I was still going to feel the pain of the AVP, so I actually went back to do a system restore to prior the McAfee installation. System runs smooth as silk, now, and I still don't have to worry about viruses. Instead, invest in a good router, and don't click on any pop ups, people!
Sometimes it's Good to Feel Protected August 13, 2008 Sara Hackett (from the Darkside) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
McAfee VirusScan Plus installed without a hitch and as far as I know it went right to work. Did I get a speed hit? Not that I noticed, but then I don't time my startup or how long it takes something to open. Everything seemed normal. I don't surf the net much with my Windows machine, Yahoo for my e-mail, Amazon and Google, that's about it, so till now, I've had no protection. It's not that I don't use the internet, it's just that I usually go there via my iMac. But my Sony Viao (which I use mostly for writing) is protected now so I suppose I can go to all those sites I've been avoiding. Just kidding. The internet is supposed to be a good thing and as far as I'm concerned if you go to those places, and you know the places I'm talking about, then you deserve whatever bad thing happens to your computer. Still, if you feel you have to go there, for research maybe, then this is undoubtedly a good product to have.
Makes log-in sluggish, but unobtrusive after that August 9, 2008 Samuel Sonne (Seattle, WA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've been using McAfee VirusScan Plus for a month now, and I've noticed that it takes about thirty seconds longer to log in than before I installed it. My computer is about four years old so if you have a newer machine you may not experience this issue. McAfee doesn't use a huge amount of memory (much less than my web browser) and it hasn't had a noticeable effect on how fast programs run, so it's pretty good in that respect. I'm careful about which programs I install, and I use Firefox and keep it up to date, so McAfee hasn't detected any viruses or malware so far. The online registration for this program was seamless. I have an old McAfee account from years ago that still existed, and this program was added to my old account without a hitch. Overall, I feel a little safer knowing that I have a program that may detect viruses that infect my computer, but it's no substitute for keeping my browser patched and my operating system up to date. If it's worth it to you to pay for the extra protection, then I don't think you'll have a problem with McAfee.
