DIFFICULT TO USE August 16, 2008 GRANGER DATA ENTRY IS VERY CONFUSING AND DIFFICULT. THERE IS NO 'CARD FILE' TO SEARCH FOR ONE INDIVIDUAL. IMPORTING DATA FROM EARLIER VERSIONS MESSES THE DATA UP. MANY ITEMS ARE LOST IN THE PROCESS. THIS WAS APPARENTLY RELEASED WELL BEFORE TRIAL RUNS. VERY DISSAPOINTED.
Newer but by NO means better!! August 13, 2008 C. Colley (between moves 37 & 38!) My husband bought this for me for my birthday - I seriously hate it and I was sooo excited at first to get it. It looks a whole lot better than previous versions but has a lot less functionality. THe All-in-one-tree chart is missing, along with a LOT of the old chart types and they've been tweaking this ever since they put it on the market. Now, if you've registered your 2008 version they are going to give you the 2009 version for free. That should tell you how badly this version went over. There was lot of anticipation for this release and it's basically not worth the box it was sent in. It looks awesome but it's nothing more than expensive fluff. Wait for the next version's reviews before "upgrading" and save yourself the headache.
Difficult Program To Work With August 4, 2008 FTM User (PA) I have been doing genealogy for a long time and for the past 6 year I have been using Family Tree Maker (FTM) software. I recently purchased the Family Tree Maker 2008 and I found it inferior to FTM 2006. It is too difficult to use and i am no computer or genealogy novice. The whole interface is different than previous versions, it makes entering individuals and facts more time consuming than previous versions. On the older versions, if you had an ancestry subscription, which i do, when you perform a search of that individual it would give you a listing of results that closely matched the individual you were searching. Now if you try to search an individual it brings you straight to Ancestry website for you to search for the individual yourself. The search opens right on program screen, but you cannot edit the individual to add the facts with the search open. Also, i never did figure out how to toggle between multiple spouses on an individual. There is also the issue of the amount of memory the program takes to run ane the delays between jumping to individuals (I have 3 gigs of ram) and also there are less report formats to choose from, including the removal of being able to make books, which was a nice feature with the index, which is a great feature especially when you have almost 40,000 names in your tree, like me. The only feature that I did like was that in the top corner of the screen, it showed you the individuals relationship to the home person. Bottom line, after using it for a week I uninstalled it and went back to FTM 2006. I am sorry i wasted my money on this program.
Family Tree August 4, 2008 J. Milliman (Carlsbad, CA U.S.A.) Still learning how to use its many facets. Slightly less than "user friendly" requires reading the instructioms and understanding them. A daunting task for a male that likes to open and use! Family Tree Maker 2008 Deluxe
Fair July 31, 2008 David C. Greenop (Grand Rapids, MI) I would have expected the program to do as least as much as the old version 10 with improvements. Not the case with this evolved program.
