3 out of 5 stars It is a toy. Do not try to plan your backpacking trip with it.   May 31, 2007

Topo USA is a very good software if you want to sit at your desk and dream about future trips. Do not try to plan details of your trip using their maps.

I had both Delorme 3.0 and 6.0. Both suffer from 2 major problems:
    - Majority of trails even in the National parks (e.g. all over Sierras, Denali, Yellowston) are missing
    - The database of lakes and rivers and the database of topography are shifted by several hundered feet. Thus, in the maps roads/trails cross the lakes and lakes are located on mountain slopes.

If you do not believe me, open their May 2007 advertizement brochure and take a look at the bottom of page 3. It shows a lake on a mountain slope and a river shifted from its riverbed.

It makes life miserable if you try to navigate by natural landmarks using a printout of their map.

5 out of 5 stars Best buy for the money!   January 9, 2007

I'm a backpacker and this is all that I need to hit the trails. Not as intuitive as I would like, but then it does so much for the money.

1 out of 5 stars Worst accuracy in the world!   November 23, 2006

This is the 3rd time I have tried the DeLorme GPS system, this purchse was the Street Atlas 2007Plus edition. As with the prior editions, it was immediatley evident that DeLorme has no intention to make it compatible with other mfg. hardware. Even the DeLorme tech had a hard time getting it to run with Garmin receivers.
The accuracy is WAY OFF! We found the comparison between our physical location vs. the Delorme map postion is of by more than 1/2 mile in many cases. AND, when driving at highway speeds, the voice prompt was giving directions more than 1mile AFTER we had passed the actual location of the maneuver.
The ONLY good thing about the DeLorme program is their ease of adding the destination address. Very simple, just type it in normal fashion. But that does not make the program work any better.
Unless you know where you are going and just what the added feature of beign able to see a map of the streets, and really don't care about .accuracy, do NOT buy the Street Atlas 2007 Plus

1 out of 5 stars Delorme Topo USA a poor choice   August 31, 2006

This product has very poor detail. Many streams and other land features are missing. Working as a forester I found this product to be totally useless. Delorme's 3D topoquad series is much better, as it uses scans of the USGS topographic maps.

4 out of 5 stars Bought it for cycling - love it!   July 10, 2006

I haven't explored all of the features yet, and may never use many of them. I bought it specifically for cycling use, planning routes, estimating distances and climbs, that sort of thing.

I've found the program pretty intuitive, I've only gotten into the help files a couple of times, and have found what I was looking for. So far, so good. I have not had any serious problems setting up routes, and the distances and climbing totals have so far been almost dead on when matched against my cyclocomputer.

Occasionally when a lot of turns in a short distance are plotted, the software will re-route, requiring you to go back and add waypoints in at mid-points. I've also found places where I've had to add in roads. In one case it was a significant 4 lane route that's been open for about 10 years, and in another case it was a leg of a major state road that splits into 2 one-way sections going through town, been that way for at least the 30 years I can remember. The changes were fairly easy to make, but paper maps of the areas show them correctly.

    Overall I love the program.
