I used Quark daily over three years for the design of a college newspaper. The program is a dream. It's a large program that won't run perfectly on older Macs, but it's well worth the RAM it hogs. Quark Xpress 4 (and its newer versions) are the industry standard, and for good reason.

As a Graphic Designer I can honestly tell you that Quark is the choice to go for if you plan to foray into the professional world of advertising and media. Quite simply, EVERYONE USES IT.I can guarantee that just about every professional designer out there does their layouts and publications in this program, every magazine, newspaper, billboard, flyer all the way to CD & DVD covers, are done in this program. In this edition, Quark has thoughtfully added a bunch of features which gives a few less headaches to worry about, like the addition of bezier lines, freehand lines, the ability to fit text to path (no longer limited to straight lines only). Also you have Quarks continued ease-of-use and simple, easy to follow menus, commands and options. Even a new user should be able to master the basics within a couple of hours of use. If you are a new-time designer or want to upgrade your old software then I definately recommend this program.
