Battleship: Surface Thunder takes the classic board game to your PC. You can play the hit-and-miss style game on three different grid sizes, or try 20 different Battleship-themed arcade missions. Both game styles feature 3-D graphics and animation, and the classic mode supports multiplayer games over LAN or the Internet. Each arcade mission emphasizes a different tactic: command your own battleship and sink enemy convoys, bombard shore gun emplacements, or free captured ports in an all-out effort to defeat a renegade empire.

4 out of 5 stars Great Game!!!   March 8, 2007
    Angelina Carroll (Summerville SC)
I bought this game beacuase my son wanted to play his Battleship game all the time but he always had trouble keeping track of his shots and either he or the person that he was playing with always got angry because things werent going the way they thought they were, LOL. Well I got this game for him and he doesn't have to keep track of anything he just plays and gets some action along with it. He loves it.

This game is simply fantastic. It is an excellent and tasteful blend of classic and arcade missions. Eye-popping graphics without the blemish of mortal combat make this game acceptable to all individuals who seek a wholesome diversion.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than expected   May 4, 2001

In light of the two previous reviews, I did not expect much.

However, I was pleasantly suprised. This game runs GREAT on my puter, a Compaq 7588, with a Pentium 3 processor. It did not run choppy or bad.

(I am a bit jazzed, as I loved the Board game while I was growing up.)

But to me, this game runs as smooth as silk, and has some good sound and visual effects.

It may also help if you run it on DIRECT X 8 instead of 7.0. I have 8.0, and it runs perfectly on my machine with no hangs or glitches.

If you play against the CPU, I have found action to be very fast and challenging.

All and all, a good game for true Battleship fans.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as it should be, a little bit of a letdown....   January 30, 2001

Well, I'll start this review off with an obvious fact, if you do not enjoy the boardgame, you will not enjoy this pc game.

That being said, Battleship fans will be dissapointed in the game play and "feel" of this pc game.

A quick work to the wise, do not under and circumstances choose high animation/resolution or medium animation/resolution in the settings. I am running a Pentium III 600 with 256 mb ram and this ran REALLY slow and choppy in any mode other than low resolution.

A problem with this game is that it is too dependent on Direct X programing. For those of you familiar with Direct X, playing a game fully coded in Direct X is not the best way to go. For those who are not familiar with Direct X game play it can best be described as being as slow and tedious as playing an Internet based game.

I expected there to be a lot of snazzy features as the boardgame itself could not be too difficult to produce, but alas, not even a "You sunk my battleship" .wav sound was made. Just some annoying background music and some bomb and splash sound effects.

Something which is not really described is the game within the game, where you control a battleship and navigate through rivers, shooting things up. Some people may enjoy this, but as for myself, I expected a really supped up and fun version of this boardgame, something which Hasbro failed to deliver.

Is it worth the ... bucks, NO. You are better off downloading battleship type games for free off of [the web].
