The best tool to test your endgame learning September 30, 2008 Andre E. Harding (New York, NY USA) This CD is very challenging. When I first got it several months ago it was kicking my butt! It made me realize that I didn't know as much about the endgame as I hoped I did...and I was near 1900 and had been over that mark a couple of years ago. The interface is much like other Convekta software, but if you're not familiar with that, I'll give a brief overview. There is a "Practice" mode and a "Test" mode (for veteran users: there is no "Study" mode in this program). In Practice mode there is a HUGE, scrolling left sidebar where you can select any topic (ex: Rook and Pawn Endings) and within that a variety of subtopics (ex: Rook against Pawn) and within that there are more divisions (ex: Pawn other than Rook's Pawn). You can select individual problems to do, skip around however you like, etc. It will give you hints if you make mistakes and show refutations of wrong moves. The mode I most often use is "Test," where you can choose any number of problems you wish to solve, from any rating bounds [1900-2750], and "New," "All," or "Erroneous" exercises. You can choose only the larger themes to be tested on (Pawn Endings, Rook Endings, etc.) but not the breakdown into small categories like in Practice mode, or you can choose to be tested on All Themes (the entire CD) if you wish. After the test you get a Rating performance and the percentage of points you received for solving the problems. Working on my "basic" endgames with materials such as THEORY AND PRACTICE OF CHESS ENDINGS (also by Convekta), and CHESS SCHOOL 4: MANUAL OF CHESS ENDINGS (by Sarhan Guliev), really filled in the gaps in my understanding. Then I started to work with this program again and I did a lot better, performing in the 2400 range. You will start to get a feel of how to approach simple-looking positions (that really aren't so simple at all!). This program won't teach you how to play endgames, so don't buy it expecting that (buy THEORY AND PRACTICE for this), but it will help your endgame play and help you calculate in the endgame better. This is a very challenging program, and I think 1700 is the minimum rating needed to benefit from it.
Excellen training tool for experienced players December 14, 2004 Igor Khmelnitsky (Philadelphia) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is an excellent training tool for players of over 1500 USCF. General comment on Endgame Training: Mastering the Endgame consists of fast and accurate recognition of standard endgame positions (setups), knowledge of common endgame strategies and ability to calculate. Your training should be split in two parts - theoretical and practical. Initially, the bulk of your training should be done using various books, suitable for your level. When you feel that your "knowledge database" is sufficient, start using this tool. If you run into subjects where you fill not adequately prepared, go back to the books. This tool is ideal for practicing! I use this software regularly so do most of my students. In my new book "Chess Exam and Training Guide: Rate Yourself and Learn How to Improve", I provide more information on how to use this tool as well as how to identify other suitable products for your training. Good luck! Copyrighted by me!
