Well the first one was very nice, making difrent types of units to counter or lead atackes waching the great graphics or using gods powers to shmash your enemiews to bits or to restor or units or even your economy, but the canpaingne way way way to short. unlike the other age of ****** games that ive played over the year this campaigne focuses on the same story over and over again i mean come on (at first, you must please posident and kill troy) ok ive done that movign on (now revive the egyptian god ) ok finished (rebuild thors hammer to revive his strength ) im not sure about you but i see a patern there, REVIVE THE GODS i mean ya its cool but over and over and over again??? it gets alitle boring! just a bit, also what i noticed is that you make them to easy even in titan mode i made when i had to renunit the pieces of osiris or re-awake the gaurdian i didnt even need osiris or the gaurdian to finish the army that came after sure lets give them cheap units that can kill anything that freaking has less then 14000 hp in one hit! Or when i had to survive norse atack for 15 minuts lol that was the funiest one ever i just went and destroyed there citeis from the start and then i see a army actualy bigger than mine so i think finaly i get to use startagy no just watch units fight each other but tell them what to atucally do and kill him eventho i have a smaller army but no! you just have to let me win after i break a stone wall down? i mean come on were not new to these games we have all played at least of age of **** game before in our lives! in the other age of ******* games we had to actualy destroy the army at the end we had to use our brains to think how we can use our smaller armies aginst that huge one in a small amout of time and you made sure we coudnt get a bigger army then there with population limits now that was fun. no moving on to the expasion...IM VEry DISAPOINTED! the atleantians are wwwwaaaaayyyyyy to over powered i mean come on so what the they have a jackass carring there food.gold/wood for them that blody basket sould get full some time soon all the units came become hereos and reusable god powers? sure that may sound good but its get boring smashing the poeple online that are true to the oldies and wana win the old FUN way but alway encounter noobs that never played this game before and somehow manage to beat them with atleantians i mean i can just send an army of 20-70 men into my enemy base and contuniu ordering my vilager knowing il win the fight but in the old game you had to comand you armies t use there advantages over other units not just go and start smashing a castle when the are 35 units hakking away at you! over all you guys reuind the game, maby im just to good at it and i need a chaleng that why i beat all you campaignes in titan mode in 5 hours time and the expansion in 2 hours time when on age of conqurers i keept tasting defate at i didnt sleep all night for i was thinking of a new way to put my ennemies in there place!

Remember the old ways poeple sometimes there funner

This game was originally for my brother for his birthday, but i think i've played it more than him!!! It's so much fun! I've spent hours on this wonderful game, marveling at it's great graphics and many twists and turns. I have always been a big fan of ancient mythology and my favorite computer game was Zues, which came close to my myth satisfaction, but Age of Mythology is far better. One minute, I could be storming my enemie's lands with an army of Medusa archers in the Greek world, and the next, destroying enemy docks with a mighty water Krakken in the Norse world. If you're not into all the extra stuff(like my brother and I) I suggest not getting the collector's version. It's a lot of money for things that we just weren't interested in (for example, the movie poster and the DVD) so if you want an excellent game with a high replay value, get this game, you'll be sorry if you don't!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing   August 9, 2003

Ok, I've had AoM for about 8 months and it's taken me that long to write this review because I've been hooked to the games. In fact, it's about 3AM as I write this review, only because I took a pause in the game to review it.

This game is AMAZING! The storyline is great (mesmerizing the first time you play and engrossing every other time) and the speed and skills of the computer player match perfectly with your level of skill. What is truly amazing is the 3D graphics. I LOVE being able to scroll my mouse button and have the entire map move around for me so I can see the fight from a different angle! Believe me, that makes a difference in the middle of a big fight. The technologies are great and the God Powers are fun to use. Having played online, I hate when people use the cheats, but some of them are really funny.

AoM also comes with Random Map, where you can hone your skills against a computer player(and the computer is really smart! I've had to learn to play much more aggressively in order to win) and Edit (where you can create your own map). I love creating maps then having friends play on them to critique.
All in All, this is a must buy GAME. I can't wait for Microsoft to put out the new campaign!

4 out of 5 stars Good game, well worth the price   June 29, 2003

If you've played Age of Empires II, you won't be too surprised by anything this game has to offer; it's more or less the same game, with a few tweaks here and there to make it more interesting and fun.

First, the reasons I pegged it a star:

The game is now a fully-rendered 3D game, instead of the 2D bitmaps like AOE2 used. On the one hand, it's kind of need to be able to zoom in and out at will and check out different angles of gameplay, but that's about all you get. 99% of the time, the 3D engine hasn't added anything that the 2D engine didn't do just fine with, but it's bumped up the video requirements SIGNIFICANTLY (i.e. make sure BEFORE you buy the game that your video card will support it), and causes the gameplay to periodically pause and grind on my machine, which, though not exactly the latest state-of-the-art, is not exactly a wimpy either. In my opinion, this was a bad call on Ensemble's part; they should have either stuck with 2D so that everyone could play it or given us more reason to have used 3D, or better yet, given us a choice of how we want to play.

They've also taken away one feature that I REALLY liked in AOE2: the ability to record a game and go back and watch it at will. I used to play people who were better than me, study their strategies, develop as a player, and eventually (a lot of times) beat them by mercilessly exploiting their weaknesses. It's kind of like watching football tapes before the big game. Can't do it in Age of Mythology. I was hoping they'd add a "rewind" feature to AOM, but instead, they took the whole feature out completely.

Now a few notes on why I like the game:

First and foremost, it's more AOE2, which is a game that I really like to begin with.

Also, I really like the idea that there are significantly more differences between civilizations now than just what special unit they get. Fundamental rules between the three major civilizations have now changed so much so that one must use drastically different strategies both playing AS different civilizations and play AGAINST different civilizations. The result is that there is FAR more variety and flexibility in how you play, which, in my book, is always a very good thing.

There are also more different TYPES of units. In AOE2, you basically had six types of units: infantry, archers, cavalry, monks, siege weapons, and naval vessels. AOM has taken away monks, but given us two new types: heores and myth units, and given us a way to affect the game completely outside of the units at all: god powers. Yet more ways to tweak strategies and find new and inventive ways to win. Very cool.

The campaign is very useful. Yes, there is only one, but there are thirty separate missions which walk you, step-by-step, through how to play the Greeks, the Egyptians, and the Norse (the three major civilizations) and give you a great feel for what kinds of strategies work and what kind don't.

All in all, I highly recommend this game. If you've played and liked AOE2, it's a no-brainer whether or not you should buy this game. If you like AOE2, you'll like AOM. If you haven't played AOE2 but you like real-time strategy games, this one is currently the standard by which others are judged.
