I am dissatisfied in the extreme with any version of Ubuntu or Suse Linux. For two years, I have been using Mandriva (used to be Mandrake) Linux with great success.
I ordered the latest Ubuntu disc and tried to install it MANY times; and in many different configurations. It seems to start working and then ... ZAP .. it freezes up completely. It doesn't matter if one is trying to do a full installation to hard disk or a quickie installation so that the program runs of its own CD (or DVD).
This all seems to have something with the fact that this incarnation of Linux has a Debian background. I don't know. I don't care. I have tinkered with my BIOS to remove suspect interrupts and this has also resulted in a NO GO.
I have left messages in loads of Linux help forums. There has been no help at that end either.
To those of you who have been able to get Ubuntu of Suse Linux working correctly, I send KUDOS and BEST WISHES. To everyone else out there, go find someone who has Ubuntu succesfully loaded on their machine. Watch them work with it for some time; and then .............

5 out of 5 stars Ubuntu is the best OS money CAN NOT get   April 16, 2007
I don t buy copy protected CD s!!!
Kubuntu is just ubuntu with a little differences, since it uses KDE instead of Gnome. It as good as ubuntu, of course. Loaded with apps, fast, easy to install and use, and all for free. Did i mention that it has no viruses or spyware at all? try it and be impressed.

    4 out of 5 stars PC users' quick primer: Ubuntu=Mac, Kubuntu=Windows   April 4, 2007
Rich Kokoska (Mansfield Center, CT United States)
For the armies of PC users wading into Linux as an alternative to VISTA, let me share a few useful points:

Flavors-Ubuntu is based on a Linux interface called Gnome (pronounce "Gee-nome", like the biological term) that looks a lot like the Apple Mac desktop. There's a top and bottom toolbar and the bottom toolbar functions a lot like the Mac "dashboard".

Kubuntu is based on a Linux interface called KDE ("Kool Desktop Environment"). It resembles and functions like the typical Windows desktop.

Ubuntu is for ordinary folks. It's very streamlined and easy to use. Kubuntu, or at least its KDE parent, seems more oriented toward the university and scientific environment and hence has more sophisticated applications (such as a scientific calculator rather than just a basic calculator). If you have the least bit of aptitude for programming or need sophisticated apps like image editing, go with Kubuntu. If you just want to be an end user and want to avoid programming, use Ubuntu. (Programmers can use any Linux program on either desktop because they know how to set them up). If you're feeling your oats, use both--they're more fun and educational than just playing games on the computer.

Ubuntu/Kubuntu are capturing a lot of attention because their project managers are trying to make them as easy to use as Windows for non-programmers. Even so, people with laptops and wireless cards are experiencing more problems than one would like. If you have an older desktop with ethernet connection you'll probably have the fewest problems.

Setting up a dual boot with Windows XP is fairly easy, with one main trap; when the Ubuntu/Kubuntu installer asks you what size you want for the first partition it means what size partition for WINDOWS, not Ubuntu, so don't make it too small. Also, you will henceforward be using the Ubuntu bootloader at startup ("Grub") and will need to arrow down to choose Windows each time. It's possible to change the boot order, but requires doing a tiny bit of programming that some of you won't feel comfortable with until your skills develop. Ubuntu's setup will find Windows and other OS's and put them in the bootloader automatically; Windows won't, so don't expect to be using the Windows bootloader ever again.

Don't try setting up a dual-boot on a VISTA machine unless you know what you're doing. VISTA doesn't play well with anything, which is why you're here reading this now...

I find this a pretty good operating system. I find microsoft is getting to expensive. I have been learning kubuntu. It works fine. A few things it lacks but most work just fine. I like the Open Office org a great equal to microsoft office and Free.
