Product Description Live LE offers two main views?the Session View and the Arrangement View?that interact in a powerful and unique way, allowing you to create, produce and perform your music all in a single application. Here is the principle behind each view: Session View - Live's Session View acts as a musical sketch and launch pad, encouraging you to try out new ideas and improvise freely. Each cell in the Session View grid can hold a loop, recording, MIDI file, complete song or any other musical element. These ideas can be recorded on the fly or dragged in from the Browser, combined and played in any order you wish. Arrangement View - The Arrangement View offers a timeline-based approach for traditional recording, MIDI sequencing, arranging, editing and other musical production tasks. And when you improvise in the Session View, all of your actions can be recorded into the Arrangement View, where they can be edited and perfected whenever you like.

Incredibly intuitive interface, but powerful November 2, 2008 wastelands (Portland, OR USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had considered and tried out demo versions of Reason and FL Studio before trying Ableton Live. Live has the ease of use of something like FL Studio, with the power of something like Reason. The UI is intuitive, requiring only occasionally resorting to reading the manual or going through tutorials. I was able to compose my first complete song in about six hours. I have some quibbles with it. There's a lot of switching between windows/tabs, because it's designed to fit everything in a single screen. Keyboard shortcuts help make up for this, though. It seems like some of the included samples may have audio glitches in them. And I miss having a wave editor in the program--I have to do some things with Audacity, like export to MP3. These complaints don't take away from my overall impression of the product, because it's so mind-blowing to begin with, and all software's going to have small problems. In terms of deciding between LE and the full version: if you're a beginner like me, there's no need to get the full version; I haven't found anything lacking yet in my first few days of using it. It's easy to upgrade to the full version if you need to, though.
great gui design distinguishes Live from the others January 16, 2008 A. Fabbri (seattle, wa USA) I tried Cubase, Sonic, and ProTools recently and found their interface design a little unwieldly and hard to learn. Live was much easier to learn. For someone who plans on recording multi-track MIDI and audio compositions at home, without a dedicated sound engineer working for you, Live is a great option. Live can also be used real-time to do live performances (thus the name Live). The bottom line for me is that Live is less distracting and more intuitive. This allows me to go from a musical vision to a recorded song with less friction. Live is great if you learn its quirks. If you are monitoring a track in Live, it will record the sound or event later than if you have monitoring turned off. This is a design choice Ableton made--and I find it to be workable so far. Live LE 6 is a good value to try out Live. You will be tempted to upgrade to the full version, however--especially if you want more MIDI instruments, etc.. Live 7 LE is not available yet, but the full Live 7 is, and it has some improvements over Live 6 that are worth considering.
