4 out of 5 stars Solid info - especially for first time WAVES users.   July 26, 2008

I was skeptical purchasing this book, particularly since the reviews varied far and wide from other purchasers. Let me offer my humble opinion as a professional who makes a living recording, engineering, producing and writing in "the business".

First and foremost, I am neither an employee of WAVES nor am I associated with it's publishing division OPEN MIX. Secondly, I purchased this product as a marketing tool to determine what other types of media existed to help train engineers on specific software platforms, plug-ins, etc. Finally, I was already quite familiar with the precepts of audio engineering, having received multiple degrees from universities on this subject matter.

That having been said, the reviewer who indicated that you should RUN AWAY FROM THIS BOOK could not be more incorrect. While I'm not denying that he may have had issues relating to the installation and operation of the bundled software and audio files, the instructions for utilizing the data was simply explained, straight-forward and non-destructive. And while I always retain back-ups of my hard drive prior to installation of new media such as these, I can only wonder why the other reviewer (a self-proclaimed professional) would not have done the same in order to avoid such difficulties.

As for the material itself - I've rated it 4 out 5 stars. Why? Overall, the writing style is enjoyable, clearly defined, and useful. The major highlights of how the author approaches his mixing technique is well documented, and equally well-linked to the DVD audio samples for the most popular DAWs on the market. Finally, the explanation of how many of the WAVES plug ins operate is superbly documented - particularly for the uninitiated.

The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is this: plenty of the WAVES plug-ins were simply not addressed at all in this tome. And while I can understand that the book is a bit dated, and many newer WAVE plugs have since become available, the ability to address these newer issues via PDF files and/or on-line downloads - could easily have been enabled. Most importantly, as it's clear that OPEN MIX is a conduit for informing users about WAVES products, with the intention of converting prospective users into bona fide WAVES CUSTOMERS, one can only imagine that the author and Waves have dropped the ball in this regard. Why?

Quite simply, the Waves line-up represents the "go-to" collection for most of us in the field. There's not a day that goes by that I'm not using dozens of their products (yes - they really are THAT good)!

And while a newer book has been announced (and at this time is purchasable but still NOT SHIPPING?!?!?!), the older book should absolutely be revised so that it is contemporary with the ENTIRE Waves Plug-in line up.

Nitpicky? Perhaps. But you should know that there are plenty of great Waves plugs that are not mentioned in this book - and if you're looking for a complete explanation - you'll not find it here.

That being said, what you will find is most useful...particularly if you're a newbie.

    Enjoy. I did!

5 out of 5 stars Great tool   February 19, 2008

I'm a beginner to mixing, and this was a great introduction. Made me want to buy Waves plug-ins, which I have. Better than reading a book because you can hear what is happening.

but i want to say it is not easy to understand. if you are the semi-producer.you may take a look about what it say.but if you are a beginner.it is not good for you.

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME buy ...   November 28, 2005

This book was incredible. When I bought it I was so frustrated by the whole mixing/mastering process I was just a few steps away from shilling out huge $$$ to take my projects to a pro studio. I AM GLAD I WAITED FOR THIS BOOK, INSTEAD! As a hobbiest musician, it gave me exactly what I needed. It's detailed and extraordinarily straight forward. I still haven't touched the audio CD's they provided - literally reading and following the screenshots is more than enough if you have a decent baseline of understanding and experience. My project sounds incredible and it's all coming straight out of my Sonar PE - no "pros" involved.

My only complaint is they don't get into ALL the plugins to the extent they should - ie. Maxx Bass, etc.. However, it's more than enough to get a person going. It's a great learning tool.

    5 stars without a doubt.

ps. Amazon does not seem to stock a lot of these - I got the last one when I bought, but it looks like [...] also sells them direct from sound.org.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful, a few flaws aside   May 30, 2005

I started buying Waves plugins a couple of years back to use with Digital Performer, the most rock-solid DAW out there. Waves has always supported DP and the MAS environment, and I believe they are a solid company with a long-term future. That is very important when you're buying software! I started out with the Ren bundles and by now I've upgraded to the Platinum Bundle, which this book covers. The Waves User Guides are fair, but not very exciting. So I was glad to get my hands on this book. I had some initial problems getting all of the audio files in order (make sure you go to Waves website and download the hundreds of megabytes of updated audio files!!!) and the way the files were set up for DP caused me to have to manually import many of the .wav files. This took some serious time. However, once all that was over, I was ready to use the book. The examples here are really good, and it helps you learn what to listen for while mixing and mastering. By muting and then unmuting a plugin, you can hear its effect on the track/mix, which is very eye-opening. Sometimes the effect is tough to hear (I imagine some high-end $5K monitors would help) but all in all these tutorials are great and will give you excellent ideas on how to up the professionalism of your own mixes. In particular, I was excited to see how kick bass and bass guitar can be bussed together and compessed/limited for a solid low end. Other than items listed above, my only other wishes would be that the author elaborate more on the selection of certain plugins (why does he choose to use an L2 instead of an L1 on a track, and vice versa?) and I also wish there were some discussion on how to use the PAZ analyzers to evaluate the mix. I hope Waves will listen to the suggestions everyone has (they actually sent me a survey to get ideas on how to improve the book, always a good sign, esp if they use the results!) and make more books like this. Yes, the price is rather steep, but you could spend the same on 4 or 5 imported computer music magazines and get far less useful info. I'm going with 4 stars on this one, and hope the next book will earn a 5. Thanks Waves!
