Is it me or is it them? February 1, 2006 Fern Botero 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have mixed feelings about this software. I'm being generous and giving it 3 stars because maybe with practice I will be able to figure out how it works. That's if I find the motivation to practice. It didn't cost much--you get what you pay for. On the other hand, I HAVE seen SOME interesting things. I started at the town I live in and could see what it looks like without a town--just mountains surrounding the valley. I saw some colorful Nebulas and a pretty good "3D" look at the Milky Way. I didn't know that Earth and our Sun were so close to the fringe of the galaxy--so I did learn one thing. I wish I knew what makes up the "ball" of the Milky Way--probably planets with little green men. I'm very uneducated regarding astronomy. God certainly didn't put us smack dab in the middle of anything! You do get a feel for how incredibly huge the Universe is from this software. It sort of gives one a bit of existential angst looking at it--or maybe it's the helplessness you feel trying to navigate the damn thing. I got close to the Moon but it really lacked detail. I'm a Moon freak (from a folklore standpoint) and Luna was disappointing. I want to know what it feels like to bounce around on the Moon but it was pretty much a blur and you can't land on it with your invisible spaceship. This could have been more entertaining and I really wish I could give it a higher rating and have fun with it but it's just so hard to figure out how it works--and don't get me started on the difficulties of the registration proceed you are forced to fill out. The whole thing is unnecessarily difficult. There are tours of space but it has no voice over and no music. (I guess I was expecting to hear the Star Wars theme). Anyway, you have to read the tour. It's impossible to look at the Universe while trying to read the other side of the screen. Maybe in another 10 years this company can put out something really exciting and educational and I hope they do. I'm not a rocket scientist nor a computer expert so maybe it's just me. But I'm sure that there are a lot of others who would feel confused by this software.
