    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Nice Mac interface++ but lacks ACT functionality   September 17, 2008
    MDP (Michigan)
For 15 years I have used ACT and depended upon it for management of my 1000+ customers. I use numerous custom fields and have produced several very customized templates for mail merging. The thing I like the most about ACT is it's ability to allow me to see all customer fields (standard and customized) in a single page layout.

No company seems willing to do this for Mac including Daylite.

I am now a Mac user for numerous reasons, most of all for it's stable OS and intuitive interface.

The only thing I miss about Windows is ACT.

The best thing for Mac users is Daylite by Marketcircle- but that program falls short in my most basic needs as custom field views, custom field mail merges, hard to develop custom templates, awkward appointment scheduling, etc, etc. I purchased that program in January of 2008 and have been very disappointed overall.

What it does very well is syncing with iPhone. I have all contact info on my iPhone and I've not had any problems (like I did with ACT).

I had refined ACT to a 1-click or 2-click ergonomy in daily usage. Daylite has made it far more complicated. To get around to the information I need the most on my laptop in finding critical customer data quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Review for the Military Members Apple User Group   June 19, 2006

Everyone knows the Mac has a lot more to contribute to productivity than word processing and spread sheets, but many organizations and businesses still don't use computers to manage their resources. Marketcircle's Daylite 3 is a Mac-only project management app that can do just that.

Aimed squarely at small businesses and organizations (Marketcircle recommends up to 50 users), Daylite prodives all the tools you could want to keep groups efficient and on-task. With it, team members can coordinate private and shared contacts, calendars, and projects.

It doesn't help you create any products. It helps you manage resources. What it does - and does well - is track people, time, projects, and material assets.

With a healthy amount of setup and maintenance, individual users will be empowered to easily manage more robust calendars and contacts than either Apple or Microsoft's products support. They can also manage notes, tasks, and much more. Perhaps most important, all of this information is shared with all users.

While you can use Daylite on a single computer, it's networked nature means you can access multiple databases from a local network or across the internet and if you're on the road, you can even take an offline copy of the database with you - very helpful for on-the-go managers!

The interface is intimidating yet everything you would expect from a Mac application. It offers quick access to all the data Daylite can store and index and basic functionality is simple enough. More advanced functions and customization can be less intuitive, though. Fortunately there is a complete sample database to give you some perspective and thorough online documentation of all features.

Thanks to that sophistication there are a lot of ways to view your data. You can can take a people-centric approach or focus on calendars, but my favorite method is project oriented. The project view summarizes endeavors with a visual timeline featuring user-defined phases along side links to all assigned staff, related contacts, component tasks, upcoming deadlines, related meeting notes, and anything else you deem relavent.

That ability to create "links" - unlimited abstract relationships - between data of all types is key to Daylite's impressive flexibility. You can link tasks to projects, contacts to calendar items, resources to meetings, and and so on.

What's more, you can actually issue instructions to team members by a similar method. Delegating just about anything - tasks, meetings, or entire projects - can be as easy a click!

On it's own, Daylite is already a client management system, a productivity suite, and team tracker all in one, but it can be even more when integrated with other tools you're familiar with. Most important is an optional module that supplies Daylite functionality in Mail. It takes up a lot of screen realestate and requires both programs to be running, but it allows you to see context-sensitive Daylite data directly in Mail and to perform functions based on incoming messages.

Less productive, but still welcome, are iPod sync, Mac OS X services for making new tasks, appointments, contacts, and notes in any application, and import/export support for iCal and Address Book. Oddly though, I actually like that I can keep my numerous business contacts separate from my more personal Address Book collection.

What really makes Daylite shine above competition like Entourage is flexibility and networking. Every aspect of the database can be tailored to the needs and culture of your organization and it's fully integrated suite of customer and resource management tools are meant to leverage the collaboration of multiple users.

The only sticking point is the price. It's too expensive for most individual users and a little steep even for groups. Especially since you have to pay extra for email integration.

Still, there's no doubt that Daylite can do much more than Entourage or Apple's default apps. Busy individuals looking to get organized should give it a try and Mac-using leaders in small businesses and organizations shouldn't pass it up without a thorough trial.

4 out of 5 stars This program made me a "switcher"   June 29, 2005

I've been using contact managers since the late 1980's. I've always been partial to Act! in all of it's incarnations because it was fast and flexible. Goldmine has a ton of great features but it's difficult to use and its interface STILL seems to be trying to break free from its DOS roots.

Until now, I've had to remain on the PC platform because it's been difficult for me to justify using a Mac because I couldn't find a program that could handle my contact management in a way that I was comfortable. Daylite solved that problem for me and I recently switched to the Mac.

For me, the "killer" feature was the ability to assign "roles" to various contacts in the database. I'm a real estate broker and can frequently have a contact who is a home buyer and a home seller -- two completely separate roles. I've never been able to find an off the shelf solution that would allow me to easily create a project or opportunity and assign the same contact to 2 different roles in the same database.

The depth at which you assign roles, categories, keywords -- and even create CUSTOM FORMS and data fields -- makes this program incredibly flexible! But it also means, as the previous reviewer stated, that there can be a bit of a learning curve. I'm the kind of person who never reads a manual -- I just plunk down and figure out a program. That wasn't the case here. So be warned that if you really want to experience the power, there's some book reading to do.

I'm giving this application 4 out 5 stars for a couple of reason. #1 - as was previously mentioned; you need to buy the DMI module separately. Linking your e-mails is ESSENTIAL in today's business world and not including that as part of the program just doesn't make sense.

The second reason I'm not giving Daylite 5 stars is because of its lack of easy import/export to the basic Mac OSX tools like the calendar and address book. It does have impor/export capabilities but not "seamless", automated procedures. You have to manually sync the Address Book (very simple, but should be automated!) and you have actually save an export file to import iCal items - a bulky chore if you update your calendar frequently.

I think this program should be able to be set up to use iSync and automatically sync the data I put into my contact manager with the rest of the iLife tools I use. I'd really like to be able to share my professional calendar with my wife via iSync and iCal...I have a life outside of business contacts!!

These are rather nit-picky points to lose a star over...and in my "gut" I'd love to give this program a 5. But 4 will have to do. :)

4 out of 5 stars Great product. The best CRM for Mac   May 15, 2005

As a Mac user, I always complained about the lack of a good CRM or contact application for Mac. While PC users had Golmine or Act!, no professional application was available for Apple users. Daylite is a great application for professional users. It has so many features and details that the more you use it, the more you start to love it. It really helps you to better manage your contacts and projects and improve your productivity. The Daylite application, to really shine and become a terrific tool, needs to be combined with the Daylite Mail Integration Module. Without it, its not as useful. I am giving Daylite only 4 stars and not 5 because it lacks a printed manual in the box (and you really need it, this is not an easy to use software as soon as you start working with it) and most important, because it does not includes the Mail Integration Module, which the company sells for an additional $39. It definitively should be included. Other than that, I highly recommended.
