4 out of 5 stars Get to know your software!   April 20, 2007

I have used Smartdraw for several years and have used three different versions starting with V5. As a long time user it is my opinion that this software can't be beat for the variety of drawings it can do, the ability to export in a wide variety of formats, and the quality of the final output. As for comments made by users who only used it for a couple of days, you should really not render such biting opinions of something you haven't had time to get to know. The complaints voiced by others are quickly and easily addressed in the options and functions provied in the program. Lines can snap to grid, straight every time. Output can be printed on large format printers or scaled to ANY size paper. The templates and object libraries are extensive and allow you to add your own custom created objects with a simple mouse drag.

Bottom line, it works fantastic and gets better with every release, and every release I spend a couple of dedicated hours exploring the interface and learning the new features. Just because you didn't take the time to learn to use a program doesn't make it bad software! Try it on a trial, and if you like it, buy it, and learn it.

1 out of 5 stars I don't like Microsoft, but you better buy Visio   December 11, 2006

Unfortunately I spent 209 dollars to buy this program. For professional diagrams I would like to have connecting lines that are perfectly straight. I maybe too picky but I spent a couple of time a couple of hours to get all the lines in the diagrams perfectly straight, I did not succeed. I know with Visio this is much less of a problem. (I then noticed that in most of the smart draw examples the lines are not straight either) So now I bought Visio. Furthermore I hate it when software starts putting their icons into other software, now I have a number of applications that show Smart Draw icons in the menu bars. And I am getting sick of all their junk mail I get.
If you are not as picky as me, then this can be a great program, but I was greatly disappointed.

    1 out of 5 stars Beware!   November 21, 2006

I regret that I am unable to give fewer than a single star. I downloaded the trial version of this software in order to assess its suitability with timelines and flowcharting for my law practice (there are three trial versions: general, medical and legal; I downloaded the version for attorneys). I found the program to have several strange bugs with regard to timelines (e.g., for some reason the timelines cannot have a start date earlier than 1970; the width of the timeline appears unchangeable; the length of the timeline defaults to 3 years (if your timeline is longer, it does not compress the timelines, but rather assumes that you will be printing on a giant sheet of paper). My effort to copy and paste a timeline into Microsoft Word (office 2003), failed miserably. Word crashed. I did not try importing into other Office applications. I decided that the program was an unacceptable alternative to Microsoft Visio and attempted to uninstall it. I then learned that the program could not be uninstalled by the Windows Uninstaller, or through the pretend uninstall application that was placed in my "All Programs" list as being specifically linked to uninstall the program. I contacted technical support. Although I had no difficulty reaching a tech support representative, I was stunned to learn that they were aware of the problem, but could care less. I was told to just drag the program files to the recycle bin. When I remarked that that procedure would not properly uninstall a modern application, I was told that there was no manual uninstall, and that only a single register entry would exist. When I advised that the register had LOTS of entries associated SmartDraw, I was told that uninstall instructions would be e-mailed to me. They were not. When I contacted tech support again, I was told that since I was uninstalling the program, I wasn't going to be a customer, so... [his voice trailed off, but you get the message]. I strongly recommend avoiding this product; what a disappointment.
