Having hundreds and hundreds of 35mm slides, I hoped this product was just what I was looking for. Unfortunately, it was not. No customer support number for help on problems. Many slides scanned either too bright or too dark. I'm very disappointed and sending it back for refund soon before the thirty-day limit.

No matter how wonderful the press for this item is, it's actually just a 5mp webcam looking at a back-lit negative or slide. The scanner I received wasn't even pointed squarely at the frame. It captured outside the frame on one side and cut-off part of the image on the other side. Yes, the negative was inserted properly. There is no adjustment for side-to-side but end-to-end can be manipulated by easing the carrier in or out slightly. There is no adjustment for focus so warped media may be out of focus. No preadjustment can be made before scanning. All you can do with poorly exposed film is scan at the factory setting and hope to be able to correct the image with software.
I only used mine for a few scans before deciding to stick with my older, slower, Olympus film scanner. I returned it and received a full refund from Heartland America. I'll look for actual user reviews on whichever scanner I consider next.

I purchased this scanner to convert my grandfathers old slides into JPEG images and was very disappointed. The light contained within the device was of poor quality and thus the images it produced were often too dark (especially photos of the sky or water) and of poor quality. I have returned this item and purched the Cannon CanoScan 8800F instead and it is far supperior. If you are looking for a quality product to preserve priceless family photos, my advice is to shell out the extra money and spring for the Cannon.

I have scanned some slides and color negatives, both with good results. Negatives have to be "reversed" using your own application, such as Photoshop. However, scans are of high quality and easy to do, once you get the hang of it.
One critcism is that the instruction manual is pretty weak - no help on the pros and cons of various scan settings or even which side of a slide to face up. It's a bit of trial and error to figure out.
Overall, a great value.
