Excellent Product December 2, 2008 G. Smith I use this enclosure to backup important data and to temporarily store files during cleanup of my system. Data transfer time is very good. The only complaint I would have is that the cooling fan runs all the time the device is powered on. I would like it to stop when the device is turned off per system power scheme.
ONE STAR,Need an enclosure for that extra HD?This MIGHT be your answer. November 29, 2008 Randy Pullman (south pittsburgh) Hello,This unit is the first of it's kind for me. Looks kinda sinister and has some weight to it. Three cables were included. One was power that had the round serial connector that fit nice and tight in the units plug. One e-sata cable w/slot plug for the back of the tower, nice touch. One USB cable. Everything fit and is secure in the unit.I don't have a clue to the quality of the units chip set. For the money it's a good buy. That being said the unit has to be controlled manually e.g. reach to it's backside to the power switch. In my book that's a deal killer. Still you'll be glad to reach for the switch. The fan is to small and the tone it makes all alone in the room is driving me mad.I'll update when I get test numbers on the O/I speed. For the money, usefulness, and material used in the build,I like it.UPDATE It's a piece of junk. I'm returning it due to the fact it doesn't work anymore. oh well Side note...I think all Antec products are junk
Perfect for the job! November 23, 2008 The Old Geezer (San Clemente, CA) I just bought two of these to use for whole system Backup. I had tried four other brands and the drives ALWAYS ran way too hot! I'm using Maxtor 6H500F0's which are 500 Gigabyte. A big benefit of this enclosure is that the drive enters standby - spins down - when idle which saves wear and tear. The other enclosures I tried did not allow the drive to do this. Most modern drives can spin down when idle, so look for this feature when buying drives. Also, the enclosure runs cool. This drive ran at 53 degrees C in another top brand of enclosure, It runs at 40 degrees C under the exact same circumstances. The MX-1 sits flat on the desk and you can stack them one of top of the other. Or you can stand them on edge using the base provided. They are thicker than the competition because of the built in cooling fan. But the difference is only about half an inch. The quality is excellent and I have nothing negative to say at all! I will be buying more!
Great External Enclosure for eSATA and USB November 21, 2008 Shannon Bradford (Ukiah, CA United States)
I bought mine about a year ago and paid around fifty dollars at the time. Around forty is probably a reasonable price these days. This is a very well made external enclosure for SATA hard drives. It is made of very durable plastic. It has a light that some people don't like because it doesn't shine in your face, but I really like it because you can see it but it doesn't light up the whole room like some do. The light is on the front and shines downward. It is a thoughtful design that gives you light without blinding you. It probably took me about 15 minutes to install the drive. It's a snug fit, but that's how it should be. I've owned several external enclosures over the years and this is by far the best. It is solidly built and looks good. It easily slips into a briefcase or bag and I've never had to worry about it getting damaged because it is so well made. Some have complained about connectors coming lose. I haven't found this to be an issue at all. Mine have stayed snug through several trips. I have used it with several motherboards and it does have problems with a few chipsets when connected to eSATA but this is the fault of the motherboard makers, NOT this device. USB works fine and is USB 2.0. The fan is a real plus on this device. It moves a lot of air and is very quiet. I'm a real stickler for noise and was surprised how quiet this fan is. Overall, I highly recommend this external enclosure. It's only weak point is that it isn't designed for to switch hard drives easily within this case the way many are starting to be.
fan is way too noisy November 18, 2008 Michael Gastfreund (Rockville, MD) the enclosure is very nice. the rubber dampeners in which the hard drive sits on really help keep the noise and the vibration down. the biggest problem is the fan. the fan is obnoxiously loud. i had to unplug the fan because it was driving me crazy. i understand this isnt the highest qualitly case but they could have put a slightly quieter fan in there. wish i got the macally usb 2.0/esata enclosure instead
