5 out of 5 stars Best Office Software   April 6, 2008

I have owned the Open Office Software package for over a year now and it is one of my all-time best buys. I was used to the Microsoft Office product and the Open Office package made transition easy. You can even use Microsoft .doc files and send them to others with Open Office. The word processing software is better than Word, but is very similar in functionality. This has to be the best value on the Net for office software, and it is complete and fully integrated. Highly recommended!

This expansive easy to use product handles all my office type needs. I don't run a business at home but it's great for letters with photo enclosures, addressing envelopes and it's there for other needs if I need it. I'm not qualified to comment on all the capabilities but I'll recommend it to other casual computer users who do not want to invest in written use software.

I am used to using Word Perfect or Microsoft Word at work, but now that I am a stay at home Mom, I just don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for such a program. But I want a program that does everything Word can do. Well I found it! Open Office!

I got the Word Home and Student version trial with my new computer, but it wasn't as intuitive and easy as Open Office. Plus, my 30 day free trial lasted only a couple of days because I clicked some wrong button. Microsoft!

I do secretarial work for my church and I was able to put a copy on the church computer and home computer free. But I like it so much, I'm going to make a donations. Or I'll buy this cd...

3 out of 5 stars Soon you will certainly want to have Microsoft Office...literally!   February 25, 2007

Open Office 2 has lots of features for less money, so if you are on a budget, you will almost surely consider it. I thought that this was a good way to save some money, but I quickly found a few drawbacks, which are as follows: (1) To use any features in Base and some features in the other programs, you need a Java runtime environment, which may be difficult to acquire, Microsoft Office does not. (2) There is no Office Assistant included in Open Office, which in Microsoft Office 97-2003 provided user-friendly, graphical help, even with a dash of humor and fun. (3) Unlike Microsoft Office XP Professional Special Edition, which also includes a free mouse, Open Office has no Outlook, Publisher, or FrontPage! It does have Draw, though, the "equivalent" of Visio, although Visio is much better, partly because Visio has more templates. It also has an "XML form document" template that opens in Writer (this template is "comparable" to InfoPath). (4) There are almost no templates that are included in OpenOffice. (5) Microsoft Equation 3, included with Microsoft Office 2002/XP/2003 and later, maybe even earlier, is a bit better tool than Math for equations, so if you frequently include equations in your documents, consider changing to Microsoft Office. Anyway, be sure of this: those who sell such "open source" products and propaganda in their favor certainly are "secret service agents" for those open source software companies. I am sure of this because the man on ebay who sold them on CD had such flattery, we almost immediately went for it.

5 out of 5 stars SOMETHING SO INEXPENSIVE IS SO GOOD   November 12, 2006

I just started using openoffice 2.04 version. What can I say,It's great word processor. In my personal opinion it is just as good as Microsoft Office 2006.I tried so many different word processor, and I never was able to find one that was a good alternative to ms word until I used this version of openoffice. It is a much improved version than openoffice version 1.0 .In this version it can open ms word documents and still hold the same format.Another great thing it can do is let's say you copy and paste a webpage to a new openoffice word doc.It will be able to save the page layout format in the same way microsoft office can.In the openoffice version 1.0 it was not capable of these functions. The openoffice suite includeds (Writer)-complete word processor or desktop publisher: (Calc)- a spreadsheet program:(Impress)a program for creating effective multimedia presentations:(base)Create and modify tables, forms, queries, and reports:(DRAW)-great for graphics and diagrams:(MATH)- for mathematical equations.
