    Amazon.com Review
Microsoft Money has helped individuals organize and streamline their financial dealings for a half-decade. The latest iteration, Money 2003, may be the most impressive upgrade in some time, with several new amenities designed to make your personal status even clearer, and your decisions and future planning even easier.

Before you invest in Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe, you should ask yourself if you really need it. If you're fortunate enough to have a simple financial environment with few delinquent payments, and if you've already arranged a comprehensive investment and online banking routine, you may find it redundant and superfluous. However, if you're constantly asking yourself where your latest paycheck went or simply don't know how to best make your money work for you, the program may well seem indispensable.

Sporting a wealth of online and offline tools, numerous instructional videos, and a series of supportive verbal prompts, Money 2003 is much more than just a simple debt and asset tracker. After a little familiarization and an hour or two with its excellent Setup Assistant, you'll soon be banking and paying bills from one convenient online interface, initiating and managing your investments, intelligently forecasting future expenditures and savings, and accurately estimating your taxes. The 2003 edition also allows you to research investments, initiate stock reminders and alerts, track equity and index options, and even customize interfaces.

Furthermore, Money 2003 Deluxe features several intriguing additional perks not found in the Standard edition. Microsoft has also included one year of complimentary online bill payments through MSN, a variety of sophisticated portfolio management and tax tools, and much more. Potential customers should be advised that many of the program's services are functional only if you have an Internet connection and a Microsoft Passport. Fortunately, the latter is free of charge.

Microsoft Money 2003 is a broad offline and online financial planner and record-keeper that will make quick work of any and all budgetary issues. Its slick presentation may even make the usually laborious job of managing personal finances downright enjoyable. --Gordon Goble

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent as a checkbook   July 27, 2008
Joe K (North Windham, CT USA)
I only use Microsoft Money 2003 for my checking account. I go to my bank account online, hit a few buttons, and import my latest bank transactions directly into Microsoft Money 2003. It's very easy, and it always reconciles to the penny. If you import the exact same transactions a hundred times, they will only show up once in MS Money 2003.

With that said, I am also an accountant, and I have been using QuickBooks for years. Most small businesses today use either QuickBooks or another camparable accounting software program. The basic 2008 editiion is only a few hundred dollars and is definetely worth it for accounting.

I'm not sure how small and broke a small business has to be to resort to using MS Money as its main accounting software, but I would not recommend it for that purpose.

    2 out of 5 stars MS Money 2003 - Don't bother   August 15, 2004

I bought this program as a replacement for an ageing version of Quicken, but I am beginning to wish I had not bothered. I have had corruptions in which I had to export all transactions from all accounts, create a new file, then re-import. Just lately though, Money keeps dropping transactions or adding its own. The result is that what Money says I have is completely different to what my online bank statement says I have. This happens even after I have reconciled against my latest statement. The reconciled balance changes completely and I have to back track to find what transactions Money has dropped or added, and all this when I have set it up to automatically download transactions from my banks online banking facility.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of harsh reviews for a great product   April 20, 2004

I've been using Microsoft Money 2002 for quite awhile and I really liked it. I decided to upgrade to Money 2003 and its even better. If you're wondering what Money can do for you, let me tell you. It can automatically download your transactions from your bank and credit cards so you can easily reconcile your accounts. When your bank (like mine, BofA) won't let Money auto-download it offers a manual download that works the same. Money can help you create budgets where you can easily track expenses. It can help you create a debt reduction plan so you know exactly how much you need to send in order to get out of debt by a certain date. You can keep track of all upcoming bills. I'm not sure I could live without it now that I've used it for so long.

2 out of 5 stars Online quotes just stopped working   February 17, 2004

After using Money 2003 for a year the online stock quote update function just stopped working. No warnings, no message, no nothing. After searching the web and reading the fine print I discovered that it will stop working 1 year from the date of registration or first use. Typical MS tactics. I am going to pick up a copy of Quicken.

3 out of 5 stars Useful software, has its downsides.   January 31, 2004
After using Money for some years (previously Money 99 FS) upgraded to 2003 Deluxe. It would not read my previous money file saying it was corrupted. After countless hours with support (they did continuously keep me updated) they said the upgrade was not supported. They even looked at my 99 file and couldnt find a reason why it wouldn't read in 2003. Anyways, I did the upgrade the hard way - export/import. Currently everything seems to work good.

One botheration which another reviewer pointed out is that the shares purchased should be rounded to 3 decimal places instead of six. It always messes up the sale if you have partial purchases like DRIP etc.
