AVOID AVOID AVOID! January 3, 2009 J. Duncan (Minnesota) SAVE YOUR MONEY!! I cannot stress it enough. First - the Summary (in case you need to save time) - *Ease of Installation: Not bad, except that once installed you have to download multiple programs for it to run properly. *DVD Ripping: Yes, it does do that *DVD/File Conversion: Don't know, it wouldn't do it, kept giving error messages - which leads me to; *Support: TERRIBLE! Help Menus are of NO service. Online support is non-existent. Okay - for a bit more detail: I purchased this product, from a local store, in the hopes of being able to rip DVDs and then convert then into a usable file that an editing program will be able to handle, or to watch on my MP3 player. Well - after installing the CD, you are then required to download multiple programs - even to update to the 2009 edition (as named on the box!). While, this is NOT that intolerable, it is not what I signed up for. After downloading all of the required software, including the "key" to allow you to bypass the Anti-Copy encryption, it did rip the DVD for me. The DVD I ripped was not encrypted, so I cannot comment on its ability to bypass the Anti-copy. When trying to convert the files into a usable format, the program TOTALLY FAILED. I kept getting error messages, and never completed a conversion (I finally gave up after 3 days). You may be thinking, "why not use the Help Menu or look online?" . . . Well - I feel that any Help Menu should tell me something that I do not already know about the product. It should be an actual "help". This product's Help Menu is not, in any way shape or form. When looking up help for file conversion, the help info said something to the effect of, "This will convert your files to a format to play on your Ipod or other device." (end of "help") Well, "DUH!!" I knew that already! That's why I bought the product. Online help is about the same. There is a forum, but looking through that mess at 2:00 a.m., during a fit of frustration is barely a solution. I should mention that I am employed as an A-V tech, so I do have a vague of idea of what I am doing with this type of product. I went to an expert in my work area, who then informed me that while he has used 123CopyDVD, he does not like it, as it is "hit and miss at best". He pointed me to some online freebies that have worked wonderfully. I tried returning this to my local store - I was informed that due to Federal Law they were prohibited from taking opened software. This is due to copyright infringement, as there is no way to know whether the software had been copied or not. It also protects the store from having to make the decision about what to take back and which not. I can appreciate that. I'm not an unreasonable person. However, where is the protection for the consumer from getting a substandard product (which, of course, you don't know until you OPEN the package), and then being stuck holding the bag for $50? I am now waiting to hear from BlingSoftware about a full refund (as they say on their box). However, since they're located in Gibraltar (and based on what I have heard in other reviews), I am NOT holding my breath. AVOID THIS PRODUCT!
