Sabrent Serial ATA Adapter - Awesome product November 14, 2008 Gary Persh (Los Angeles, Ca USA) I love this product. I use a lot of external hard drives and this made it so easy for me. With both the SATA and IDE adapter, I can easily swap out my external hard drives without using an external case
Awesome! November 13, 2008 SMXSteve (Seattle) Right out of the box, easy to hook up and connect. I have a variety of drives from laptops and desktops, IDE and SATA and very little trouble getting them to work. Some are over ten, fifteen, years old so I had to play with the master jumper to get XP to recognize them (even tho the instructions say set to master) but they all worked. (I never tried a DVD or CD player but I didn't buy it for those.) But it is so awesome to be able to hook up a drive, read the data or use it for back up while the computer is on! Speed is fantastic as well!
Bleh should have read more reviews November 5, 2008 Derrick Ceppa 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Had a lot of great reviews, so I went ahead and bought it. As soon as i connected it i saw smoke like a previous person did as well. Drive is now dead. I'm not totally sure if i want to go through the hassle of getting a new one or not. I am glad i have quite a bit on backup, but unfortuneatly not everything. If you are going to use it, make sure everything of any importance to you is backed up on cd/flash drive.
Power adapter fried my hard drive. November 4, 2008 Doralyn 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sabrent USB-DSC5 Serial ATA or IDE 2.5-/3.5-Inch to USB 2.0 Cable Converter Adapter with Power Supply First of all, I'd like to mention that before purchasing this item, I took care to read many of the reviews here, and thus concluded that it would probably be a safe purchase as I did not see any mention of the adapter actually damaging hard drives... I've been helping people in IT for several years and came across this product recently. In the process of moving overseas I decided it would be useful to connect my Seagate Barracuda 500Gb internal hard drive to the laptop I'm using until all our stuff is shipped over to our new house, as well as in the future when helping other people. Big mistake. I received the adapter and within a few seconds of plugging the power cable into the hard drive I smelt what any computer-enthusiast dreads to smell - the hard drive was smoking. I immediately ripped the power cable out but unfortunately it was too late. Goodbye 450Gb worth of data which I have accumulated over the last four years. Luckily I had some backed up, but there's still a lot which I'll never be able to replace. I tried replacing the control board with another identical one on the actual hard drive since that was the component which had burned, however, the drive still makes a unnatural reading sound and won't recognize on a PC. Seems like the mechanical arm is also broken. I sent the adapter in for a RMA and after confirming that it was indeed a defective product, they sent me back a new one (Needless to say, I'm somewhat scared to even risk trying it out...) Although none of the packaging or documentation that came with the adapter had any warnings or disclaimers to cover themselves, they still refused to cover the expense of data recovery on my fried hard drive (About $899-1299), however they have agreed to replace the fried hard drive with another new one. If you're interested in purchasing this product, be sure you're willing to risk frying your hard drive. There may not be a lot of bad reviews on this particular product here, but be warned that there are bad reviews on some of their other products for the same reason - their power supplies frying hard drives. Just be careful to look around and read reviews before choosing. I would rather recommend you consider an external casing for an internal hard drive which will basically do the same thing, but without the adapters to connect to other devices as well. That would probably be somewhat safer since you could purchase from a more reputable company.
Incompatible with DVD drives October 28, 2008 wwj (Atlanta, GA) Low rating because of poor documentation and incompatibility issues. First, I tried desperately to get this device to work with two Western Digital (WD) hard drives, to no avail. I later found out (NOT on the Sabrent website, NOT in the product instructions, but in a customer review online), that for WD drives, you need to set the jumper to CS (cable select). It worked great once I figured this out. Secondly, I tried unsuccessfully to get it just to connect to two different DVD drives(a Samsung and a Lite-On). The bottom line is there is a design flaw: If you connect the power supply you cannot connect the IDE connector, and vice-versa. You cannot connect both at the same time because one is in the way of the other, making this useless for these DVD drives that I have. There may be DVD drives out there that are designed differently, with more space between the power and IDE connections, I don't know. However I have found other USB to IDE cables out there which are designed differently and so do not have this problem.
