Ekhart Tolle's message is simple: living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle's clear writing, supportive voice, and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who's ever wondered what exactly "living in the now" means. Foremost, Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book, readers are already holding the world in a different container--more conscious of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine peace and happiness.

Tolle packs a lot of information and inspirational ideas into The Power of Now. (Topics include the source of Chi, enlightened relationships, creative use of the mind, impermanence, and the cycle of life.) Thankfully, he's added markers that symbolize "break time." This is when readers should close the book and mull over what they just read. As a result, The Power of Now reads like the highly acclaimed A Course in Miracles--a spiritual guidebook that has the potential to inspire just as many study groups and change just as many lives for the better. --Gail Hudson

    Product Description

It's no wonder that The Power of Now has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 foreign languages. Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, "the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death." Featuring a new preface by the author, this paperback shows that only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.

Eckhart Tolle is emerging as one of today's most inspiring teachers. In The Power of Now, already a word-of-mouth bestseller in Canada, the author describes his transition from despair to self-realization soon after his 29th birthday. Tolle took another ten years to understand this transformation, during which time he evolved a philosophy that has parallels in Buddhism, relaxation techniques, and meditation theory but is also eminently practical. In The Power of Now he shows readers how to recognize themselves as the creators of their own pain, and how to have a pain-free existence by living fully in the present. Accessing the deepest self, the true self, can be learned, he says, by freeing ourselves from the conflicting, unreasonable demands of the mind and living present, fully, and intensely, in the Now.

4 out of 5 stars Now Is The Time   May 21, 2008
One often reads in spiritual works that a teacher will appear when the student is ready. I like to say that there is nothing that can be written that has not already been applied to paper, parchment, or stone. When the individual is ready he or she will be lead to the version that will resonate with them. That's why some love this book and others don't.

I find the writing a bit tedious and redundant, but it does drive home the message about living in the now. That may or may not be a spiritual truth but it is definitely a psychological one. That's why there is so much hate in the world; people can't or won't let go of the past, and their drive to bring about their idea of a bright future clashes with the contrary desires of other egoic individuals and groups

I rated the book a four because moving people to think about their mind-body thoughts and the resultant thought forms, the good and the bad, is a giant step toward personal and collective improvement and maybe even to enlightenment. As I wrote in my novel, Standup Comedian: The Secret and Beyond "If your dogma craps on your brotherhood you need to housebreak your religion."
Kenneth Ray Taylor author of Beyond the Shadow of Death: Book One of the Adam Eden Series and Return to Zero: Book Two of the Adam Eden Series

3 out of 5 stars listen closely   May 20, 2008
i have mixed emotions about this product.
i love the message, but i am not crazy about the messenger.
excellent teachings and advice. the problem is they got the author to read it. maybe they should have gone with an actor or a singer.
the author's voice is an annoying monotone and it has little to no projection to it. this makes it difficult to understand what he is saying and i have to crank my cd player up and often rewind to listen to parts i couldn't understand the first time through. this can be annoying and disrupts any continuity in listening.again-i love the message, but perhaps this item is best if dealt with in a book format.

    5 out of 5 stars We have a winner   May 20, 2008

And it is now. Many scholars and theologians have proposed that it was actually five to seven minutes ago, with some going so far as claiming it to have been last Tuesday. Still others say that it will be in the next few minutes, with Dr. Chuck Woolery being the strongest voice in the "two and two" school. But Eckhart deftly melds the seminal works of Van Hagar and Jesus Jones, into the definitive survey "Now That's What I Call Music" and produces an ironclad defense of immediacy. Do these alternate viewpoints still have a leg to stand on? Not now!
