    Product Description
From the 1979 invention by two MIT students of the visible calculator to the war between Lotus and Microsoft for dominance in the spreadsheet market, this book is a fascinating look at the software application that helped spur the entire computer industry. This loving look back at the early computer and technology evolution will teach anyone interested in computer history about the MIT students, Bricklin and Frankston, and their unique vision; how Mitch Kapor and Lotus 1-2-3 trumped VisiCalc; how the spreadsheet gave businesses a reason to buy PCs; and how Microsoft came to dominate the market. The book also contains descriptions of 25 amazing spreadsheets that users can download from the book's web site.

    2 out of 5 stars A tantalizing glimpse.   May 4, 2008
    J. P. HIGBED (Melbourne, Australia)
The Spreadsheet was the application that made Personal Desktop computing a "must have" in the corporate and Government worlds. I know a bit about the history of its development. Of the spectacular rises, and equally explosive crashes. Of the breakthroughs and dead-ends. But this book seems to want to be an artistic triumph, rather than an informative record. 5 out of 5 for production values. 1 out of 5 for content. Read Wikipedia instead.

I bought this as a stocking stuffer for my husband who's really into computers. He enjoyed it, it's an interesting history w/entertaining pages. I was worried it was a bad gift, but he enjoyed reading it. Not sure that it will be viewed again but it's interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Book for Excel Fanatics   June 21, 2005

This is simply a fun book! I caught myself smiling more than once as I went through this light hearted look at spreadsheets. The brief history of the spreadsheet is both informative and entertaining. In addition, there are useful tips for beginning and intermediate users peppered throughout. The best part is the chapter where real Excel users highlight how they use Excel in their daily lives. Lots of sample files come with this book. Five stars for originality and entertainment value.
